• GA057-085001 Church
  Description

  On a slight SW-facing slope in open pastureland. It stands immediately S of a byroad along which the td. boundary runs: on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map it is shown as being in the adjoining td. of Kilcahill. A poorly preserved rectangular church (E-W; L 11.8m, Wth 5m) of medieval date, possibly incorporating part of an early oratory. The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 223-4) describe its 'side walls' as being 'built of large stones in a rude style' and illustrate a trabeate doorway in its W gable. Large sections of E gable, S wall, and S end of the ivy-mantled W gable still stand. The masonry, though it includes some large blocks, is typical of medieval rather then E. Chr, period stonework. No trace of the trabeate doorway survives and there is a gap towards W end of S wall which could mark the site of a S doorway. The only surviving architectural feature is the lower part of a tall single-light window in E gable. A CBG (GA057-085003-) lies immediately to S and the site of a wayside monument (GA057-111----) c. 210m to NE. A number of houses (GA057-085002-) are also associated, one of which abuts S wall of the church.   Description

  To S and W of a church (GA057-085001-). The grassed-over foundation lines of five rectangular houses are visible. One of these (N-S; L 11.2m, Wth 5m) abuts S wall of the church. The remainder have different orientations, but almost identical dimensions (L c. 7m, Wth c. 3.5m). Traces of a low curving bank are visible in the vicinity of the westernmost examples.   Immediately S of a church (GA057-085001-). A roughly L-shaped area (E-W 18m, N-S 17.3m) delimited by the church to N and a house site (GA057-085002-) to E; elsewhere no enclosing element is visible. Generally orderly N-S running lines of grave-markers oriented E-W are visible. Some dressed stone fragments from the church were also used. • GA057-087 Cist
  Description

  On a low E-W running esker ridge. During quarrying in 1933, a short almost rectangular slab-built cist (NE-SW; L 0.75m, Wth 0.6m, H 0.45m) was found. It contained the cremated bones of an adult, an Irish Vase, two plano-convex flint knives and a small segmented bone object. Sometime before 1933 another cist containing bones had been found c. 100m to W, also as a result of quarrying, but it was not investigated (Costello 1935, 63-6; Waddell 1975, 15-16; 1990, 93).
