• GA095-028 Castle - tower house
  Description

  On a slight rise on rock outcrop in rough scrub and pastureland. This tower house was in the possession of ‘Tybbot McAwge’ in 1574 (Nolan 1901, 121). O’Donovan noted that in 1598 it was the residence of the son of Tibbot Mac Davuck Burke and in an Inquisition taken at Galway in 1608 it was listed as one of the castles of Clanrickard (O’Flanagan 1927, vol. 1, 170-71). It consists of a six-storey high rectangular tower (L10.8m; Wth 9.05m) constructed of roughly coursed blocks laid in mortar with ashlar quoins and a base-batter. Though reasonably intact on inspection in December 1982 and August 1992, its ivy-covered walls were in a dangerous condition and structural cracks were visible running from the top to the bottom of the NW and SE walls. The original doorway, in the NE wall, was blocked up by rubble from the partial collapse of the upper portions of the wall. The spiral stairs were located in the N corner. The 1st-4th floors all comprised a small subsidiary chamber to the NE of the main room but on the 5th floor the main room occupied the full width of the tower. There was a stone vault between the ground/1st floor and also over the 4th-floor subsidiary chamber. There were fireplaces in the SW wall on the 3rd and 4th floors and possibly also on the 1st floor. There were intramural passages in the SE wall on the 3rd floor, in the NW and SW walls on the 4th floor, in the NW wall on 5th floor, and in the NW and adjoining portions of the SW wall on the 2nd floor. The latter appeared to lead to a latrine but the function of the others, and the original access to them, was unclear due to collapse. Little survived of the parapets or roof but the presence of corbels at this level, centrally placed along the SE, SW and NW walls, indicated the former positions of machicouli. The windows consisted of flat, round and ogee-headed single lights, save for the two upper floors which were lit by a number of twin-light ogee-headed examples. There were also a number of circular and cross-shaped gun-loops. In early January 2011, following a severe cold spell, the S corner of the tower collapsed and masonry fell from the SE and SW walls between the 1st floor and the top of the tower, including the machicolation on the SE wall. The NW wall appeared to be in a more precarious state. (Cody 1989, 362-7) The tower stands within a very small rectangular bawn (GA095-028001-), off the NE side of which a later building (GA095-028003-) extends. There is an outer bawn (GA095-028002-) off the NW wall. • GA095-028001 Bawn
  Description

  This small rectangular bawn (c. 20m NE-SW; c. 16m NW-SE) surrounds 'Derrydonnell Castle' (GA095-028----). Cody (1989, 365-6) recorded that the walls were c. 3m distant from from the castle on all sides and that it was constructed of roughly coursed mortarted rubble. The walls (H 2.5-3m; Wth 1m) survived in a fair state along most of the SE, SW and NW sides. The NE side was greatly collapsed where a later building (GA095-028003-) extended off it. Sections of collapse also occurred along the S end of the SW side and mid-way along the SE side. Angle bastions were visible at E and W. There were five gun loops in both and two further examples were visible close to the W bastion, one in the SW wall and one in the NW wall. On re-inspection in February 2005, it was found that the SW wall had been damaged as a result of land-improvement works in the area. • GA095-028002 Bawn
  Description

  This outer bawn (28.5m NW-SE; 20.5m NE-SW) extends off the NW side of the inner bawn (GA095-028001-) surrounding 'Derrydonnell Castle' (GA095-028----). It is defined by a much-collapsed wall (H 1-2m; Wth 1.6m), apart from a short 2m stretch of the NE wall where it is best preserved (H 3-4m; Wth 2m). The walls are heavily overgrown with thorn bushes and piles of rubble are visible along the internal face of the NW wall. Cody (1989, 366-7) recorded that a substantial drystone wall (L 8m) extended off the N angle of the inner bawn and ran NW towards another equal length of a high masonry wall, also running NW. The latter appeared to be a gable wall and it abutted another drystone field wall running at right angles to it. The gable wall is probably the remains of the building shown in the interior of this bawn on the 1839 edition of the OS 6-inch map and the field wall was probably built on the line of its NW wall.   Description

  Built on the line of the NE wall of the inner bawn (GA095-028001-) surrounding 'Derrydonnell Castle' (GA095-028----), this rectangular building (max. dims. c. 12m NE-SW; c. 8m NW-SE) is partially levelled; its NE half is best preserved. Robbed-out opposing doorways are visible in the NW and SE walls. The interior is covered with rubble. Cody (1989, 366) noted that the position of the building, at a point where it would have blocked the covering fire from the N side of the E angle tower, indicated that it was of later date than the castle. He further noted that the presence of a large rectangular window ope in the SE wall contrasted sharply with 'the security consciousness evidenced by the narrow loops of the tower-house' (ibid.) • GA095-029001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  In rough but flat pastureland, some 310m to the SSE of a tower house (GA095-028----). This ecclesiastical enclosure (diam. c 110m) is defined by an earthen bank, which on inspection August 1992 was almost totally obscured by thorn and briar growth at NE and NW. Field-clearance rubble had been piled up against it at NW. From ENE to ESE it was defined by a low grassed-over bank and it was badly denuded at SE where a scarp defined it. It was best preserved at SW (Wth 2.5m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 0.6m). A good deal of stone protruded from the bank in this sector and several inner and outer facing stones appear to have revetted the base of the bank. Apart from the relatively clear SW sector, the interior was densely overgrown. A modern NE-SW running field wall cut across it at NE and WSW and another roughly NW-SE running wall cut across it at NW and S. Centrally located was a church (GA095-029002-) with a graveyard (GA095-029003-) immediately to its S. Traces of a possible radial double-faced drystone wall, overlain by a modern field wall, ran NE from the church. There were other traces of old field walls immediately outside the enclosure to the N and E which may be an associated field system (GA095-029004-). On re-inspection in February 2005, following a report of ground works in the area, it was discovered that a section of the bank of the ecclesiastical enclosure had been removed from SSE to S. Soil had been dumped along the bank at NE and it has been stripped of its sod cover at ENE. Current OSi aerial imagey (OSi Digitalglobe 2011-1013) indicates that enclosure to the W of the roughly NW-SE running wall is now clear of overgrowth and the outline of the bank is clearly visible in this sector. A bullaun stone (see GA095-029005-) lies c. 20m to the N and a house (GA095-031----) lies c. 135m to the SE. • GA095-029002 Church
  Description

  In the centre of an ecclesiastical enclosure (GA095-029001-). This very poorly preserved medieval church (int. dims. 12m E-W; 5.8m N-S; wall T 0.6m) is much obscured by ivy. The W gable and N side-wall are intact and a plinth is visible at the base of both walls. Only short lengths of S side-wall (L 2m) and E gable (L 0.6m) survive. The church is constructed of very large thin limestone flags and a mortared rubble core. The only visible architectural features are three corbels: two projecting from the internal face of the W gable and the third one from the SW corner. They indicate the former presence of a loft at this end of the church. The W end of interior of the church is artificially raised by collapsed stone and the E end is densely overgrown with thorn and briar growth. One graveslab within it is dated 1840. A table-tomb, possibly of 19th-century date, has been built on the line of the S side-wall. • GA095-029003 Graveyard
  Description

  Associated with a medieval church (GA095-029002-) and an ecclesiastical enclosure (GA095-029001-); this subrectangular graveyard (c. 45m E-W; c. 40m N-S) lies immediately to the S of the church. It is enclosed by a stone wall which curves slightly around the S sector, suggesting that it may be following the line of an internal division of the ecclesiastical enclosure. On inspection in December 1982 several upright headstones were visible in the interior. On re-inspection in August 1992 they could not be seen due to the dense growth of thorn trees and bushes which made the graveyard virtually impenetrable.
