- GA098-111 Religious house - Franciscan Third Order Regular
Description
On a hillock in gently undulating pastureland and occupying the E half of an associated graveyard (GA098-111001-). A nunnery was founded here by St Patrick for his sister St Richella. By 1563 it was occupied by Franciscan monks (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 271). What survives is a multiphase medieval church, in fair condition, consisting of a rectangular nave (21.8m E-W; 6.25m N-S) with a S transept (7.7m N-S; 5.6m E-W). The 1838 and 1933 editions of the OS 6-inch map also show a lateral extension to the N at the E end of the church; it was possibly the sacristy. All that now survives of this is the low foundation line (L 5.7m) of its W wall. Of the church, which is heavily overgrown with ivy, the W gable, the W half of the N wall and most of the S wall survive but the E gable has been levelled and only the foundation line of the E half of the N wall is visible. The S wall is in a much-collapsed state to the E of the transept; all the walls of the latter structure survive; it appears to be a later addition as its E wall is not bonded into the nave. The main surviving architectural features in the nave include a pointed-arch doorway in the W gable with a beautiful font in its S jamb and a round-headed single-light window set off-centre above it, a piscina and two rectangular windows in the S wall, one of which is blocked up. In the transept there is a fine pointed two-light window with a quatrefoil in the S gable and a rectangular window in the E wall; a modern graveslab has been inserted into the lower half of the latter one. Two medieval graveslabs (GA098-111003- and GA098-111004-) are visible within the nave. (O’Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 485-8) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 19 February 2020
- GA098-111001 Graveyard
Description
This graveyard (55m E-W; 50m N-S), roughly trapezoidal shaped in plan, is associated with 'Kilboght Convent' (GA098-111----) which occupies its E half. It is enclosed by a stone wall and access is at the NW corner. A number of mature trees are growing within it. Most of the headstones date to the 19th century. Two large burial vaults are visible, one to the SW of the church, is dedicated to the Burke family and is dated 1814; the second one was flooded and inaccessible at the time of inspection. Most of the graveslabs are overgrown or are covered with ivy. Some cut-stone fragments from the church have been reused as grave-markers. Two medieval graveslabs (GA098-111003- and GA098-111004-) are visible in the nave of the church. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 19 February 2020
- GA098-111002 Graveslab
Description
This slightly tapering graveslab (L 1.83m; Wth at base 0.58m; Wth at shoulder 0.56m; Wth at top 0.18m) is one of two 17th-century graveslabs (see also GA098-111003-) within the church (GA098-111----). The head of the slab is rounded and it varies in thickness of between 0.1m to 0.4m. A raised open lozenge forms the head and arms of a cross and the shaft running from it ends on a stepped Calvary base. Within the lozenge the monogram IHS is visible and a small Greek cross that springs from the horizontal bar of the 'H' is similar to a graveslab (GA117-065006-) in Lickmolassy. The graveslabs were brought our attention by Dr C. Cunniffe. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 19 February 2020 The following image has been uploaded: GA098-111002-_01.jpg
- GA098-111003 Graveslab
Description
This is one of two 17th-century graveslabs (see also GA098-111002-) within the church (GA098-111----). It is roughly rectangular in shape (L 1.94m; Wth at top 0.87m; Wth at bottom 0.69m; T 0.17-0.2m) and is dated 1642. It is dedicated to a priest. The inscription runs around the edges of the slab. The graveslabs were brought our attention by Dr C. Cunniffe. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 19 February 2020 The following image has been uploaded: GA098-113003-_01.jpg

- GA098-097 Castle - tower house
Description
On a hummock in undulating grassland, some 70m to the W of a stream. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of Walter Wall (Nolan 1901, 121). Only the S wall (int. L 7.9m; H 2.55m) and sections of the E (L 5.5m; H 1.95m; wall T 1.55m) and W (L 12.5m; max. H 2m) walls survive of this poorly preserved tower house; the N end of the W wall is reduced to a mound of rubble and there is no visible surface trace of the N wall. The walls are constructed of regularly coursed roughly cut rectangular mortared limestone blocks of limestone. Parts of the external wall-face has collapsed on all three walls, exposing the rubble core. Traces of internal render are visible. Apart from a blocked-up aperature (Wth 1.7m), roughly centrally located in the S wall, no architectural features are visible. Rubble has been piled against S end of the external face of the E wall and internally against the SW corner and the N end of the W wall. A later stone wall runs S from the SW corner and a later rectangular structure (4.45m N-S; 2m E-W; wall T 0.7m) was built against the S end of the W wall. Description
This record was formerly classified as Unclassified earthwork in the SMR (1987) and as Earthwork unclassified in the RMP (1997). A review of the evidence indicates that it is a series of disused gravel pits. Therefore, it has been reclassified as a Quarry. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 14 July 2015
