• GA035-003001 Bridge
  Description

  Spanning a small westerly flowing stream that feeds into Salt Lake. According to local information (pers. comm. T. Robinson 1986), this fine old bridge (H 2m; Wth 3.8m; L 6m) was the pre-Nimmo road or bridle path into Clifden from the S. It consists of a segmented single-arch bridge constructed of mortared masonry. The arch on the W side is complete but that on the E side has been re-enforced with concrete and iron girders.   Description

  In a densely wooded area. Named ‘Old Mill’ on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map and depicted as a building, aligned NNE-SSW, spanning a small westerly flowing stream that flows into the nearby Salt Lake to the W. No visible surface trace of the mill was found. However, on the N side of the stream the possible course of the dried-up millrace (L 15m) was noted running parallel to it.   On a high rocky knoll overlooking a narrow pass, and the Owenglin river, to N. Poorly preserved subcircular cashel (E-W 27m, N-S 24m) defined by a much-collapsed drystone wall, best pre­served ESE-WNW. The remains of two poorly defined huts occupy the interior. (Info. M.   Description

  In rough pasture c. 27m S of the Dúinín road, between it and Loch Doire Mhicín. It consists of a rectangular grave (L 3m, Wth 1.2m) outlined by small stones and aligned E-W. Said locally to be the grave of 'the man the curate shot', linking it with the story of Fr Myles Prendergast shooting the spy who was tracking him when he was on the run after the 1798 Rebellion (info.
