  Description

  In level grassland on the E bank of the Cannahowna River. Indicated and annotated 'G.P.' (gravel pit) on the OS Fair Plan and as an irregular enclosed tree plantation on the OS 1:2500 plan (surveyed 1912-16). An oval flat-topped mound of earth and stone (30m NE-SW; 24m NW-SE) is visible. Slight traces of a low bank are visible at S. Large rocks and boulders are scattered in the WSW sector. Most of the trees have been removed. Possibly a quarry site that was subsequently landscaped.   Description

  On a low hill in pastureland. Poorly preserved almost circular rath (21.3m NW-SE; 20.5m WSW-ENE) defined by a bank of earth and stone.   Description

  On a rise in grassland. This poorly preserved circular cashel (diam. 29.5m) is defined by a collapsed drystone wall from SSE through W to NNW that is overlain by a field wall. Another field wall cuts the monument from NNE to SSE, immediately to E of which lies a railway line. A disused trackway cuts it from NNW to NE.   Description

  Within the W half of the interior of a cashel (GA123-063----). This well-preserved drystone-built L-shaped souterrain (L >10.6m) consists of two chambers connected by a short passageway. Access is gained at the SE end of the 1st chamber (L 5.1m; Wth 1.45m; H 1.25m) which runs NW-SE. The passageway (L 1.7m; Wth 0.7m; H 0.72m) extends off the N end of the E side-wall and leads to the 2nd chamber (L 3.8m; Wth 1.3m max.; H 1.54m) which runs NE-SW. Alcoves are evident in the N and E walls of the 1st chamber, in the S wall of the passage, and in the N wall of the 2nd chamber. This graveyard is defined by an unenclosed irregular area within which a variety of grave-markers are present, including plain set stones, crosses and 19th- and 20th-C inscribed limestone slabs. • GA123-065 Burial ground
  Description

  On a gentle SE-facing incline in pastureland. Shown on the OS 1:2500 plan (surveyed 1912-16) to occupy the SW end of a large roughly rectangular field, this rectilinear burial ground (62m NE-SW; 31m NW-SE) is defined by roadside boundary walls along the S and W sides. The enclosing walls shown on the N and E sides appear to have been levelled. Access is via a gateway along the W side. According to local information, it was known as 'Bully's Acre' and people who died in the workhouse located on the outskirts of Gort, c. 630m to the SSW, during the famine were buried here. Numerous small headstones mark graves and three modern headstones, the earliest dating to 1905, are visible close to the gateway. Three trenches are visible running roughly in line with the long axis of the site. A fourth trench lies along the N limits of the site. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 26 March 2020

• GA123-066 Souterrain
  Description

  In an area of low-lying pastureland and outcropping rock, c. 40m to the E of a river. This drystone-built souterrain was initially visited by the Survey in August 1982. It consisted of a chamber (L 7.1m; Wth 1.5m; H 1.6m) running NE-SW and access as gained at its SW end. From the NE end a narrow, partially blocked, rock-cut passage ran SE for c. 1.8m and then curved to the SW. Two recesses were evident in the SE wall. A revisit in May 1992 indicated that the souterrain had been filled in and no visible surface trace now survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 10 October 2019

  Description

  Detached double-height limestone railway goods shed, built c.1870, with timber canopy over roadside elevation. Pitched slate roof with tooled chimneystack to north-east gable, and cut-stone copings. Roughly dressed walls with dressed quoins. Round-arched opening to north-east gable with dressed voussoirs, now blocked up. Square-headed window opening to same gable, now blocked, with dressed voussoirs and cut-stone sill. Oculus windows to upper gables, with timber louvers. Vehicular entrance to front (north-west) elevation and south-west gable, with timber battened sliding doors with cast-iron wheels to front elevation, and replacement sliding door to other. Located in railway station grounds.

  Description

  Detached multiple-bay single-storey limestone railway station, built 1869, with two-bay central block, lower three-bay single-storey wing to south-west elevation, and lower two-bay single-storey block to north-east elevation. Currently under renovation. Hipped slate roofs with cut-stone corbelled eaves course. Snecked cut-stone walls with rock-faced rusticated quoins and plinth course. Segmental-headed window and door openings to south-east elevation, square-headed window and door openings to north-west elevation with moulded surrounds, some now blocked, having cut-stone surrounds and tooled sills with moulded brackets throughout. Square-profile water tower to north-east of site, removed and rebuilt at present location c.2009, having coursed dressed walls with rock-faced rusticated quoins and plinth course. Round-headed door opening with rock-faced rusticated surround, and step formed by plinth course. Set within grounds of railway station.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built 1929, with full-height canted end bays to front (south-west) elevation and full-height two-bay return to rear. Sprocketed hipped slate roof, gabled to return, with red brick chimneystacks to main block, and rendered chimneystack to return, moulded brick eaves course and terracotta ridge cresting and finials. Sprocketed hipped roofs to canted bays. Red brick walls to front elevation, rendered walls to sides and rear. Square-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows, with terracotta sills to front elevation, render sills to side and rear elevation. Elliptical-arched opening to first floor of central bay, with terracotta voussoirs and keystone, and balustraded balcony, replacement uPVC windows set within. Elliptical-arched opening to north-west gable, having red brick block-and-start surround, terracotta keystone, render sill and margined timber casement windows. Elliptical-arched door opening, with similar detailing to opening above, having replacement uPVC door. Wrought-iron pedestrian gate and railings on red brick plinth wall. Set back from road.

  Detached corner-sited three-bay two-storey house, built c.1860, with shopfront to ground floor and single-bay two-storey extension with monopitch roof to south-east elevation, and two-bay two-storey extension to rear (north-east) elevation. Pitched slate roof with rendered end chimneystacks and copings. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls with render quoins. Square-headed window openings, formerly tripartite to end bays, with moulded render surrounds, painted stone sills and replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed door opening with painted stone block-and-start surround, replacement timber panelled door and overlight. Shopfront comprises fluted timber pilasters and brackets with gabled caps, flanking timber fascia with raised carved lettering and dentillated cornice, timber display windows on render stall risers flanking central square-headed door opening with glazed timber panelled door and overlight.

  Single-span railway bridge, built 1869, carrying Ennis to Athenry railway line over street. Battered rock-faced snecked limestone abutments, with moulded limestone string course, rock-faced approach walls behind abutments, and steel and concrete deck with metal parapet railings.

  Terraced four-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, with shopfront to north end of ground floor. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Channelled rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with moulded render surrounds, tooled limestone sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, ground floor window with chamfered sill now blocked. Square-headed door openings with moulded render surrounds, one has timber panelled door with overlight, another now blocked. Render shopfront comprising render pilasters and console brackets flanking channelled render pilasters, in turn flanking square-headed opening with render fascia and moulded cornice, timber display window and glazed timber door with overlight.   Detached four-bay two-storey limestone former constabulary barracks, built c.1860. Now in use as house. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, cast-iron rainwater goods and cut-stone corbelled eaves course. Snecked cut-stone walls and quoins. Square-headed window openings with tooled sills and timber sliding sash windows, three-over-three pane to first floor and six-over-six pane to ground floor. Square-headed door opening with double-leaf half-glazed timber panelled door set in carved limestone doorcase comprising paired pilasters with brackets supporting pediment detail. Square-headed door opening to south-east end with timber panelled door and overlight. Garden to front of house with cast-iron pedestrian gate, rendered piers and boundary wall.

  Detached gable-fronted single-bay single-storey former forge, dated 1912. Pitched corrugated-iron roof with rendered chimneystack. Pebbledashed walls, render date plaque with horseshoe motif, and marble plaque to front elevation. Camber-headed door opening to front with render surround and double-leaf timber battened door.

  Description

  Detached two-storey limestone former fever hospital, dated 1848, having three-bay ground floor and four-bay first floor, and single-storey ruinous extension to rear (north-east) elevation. Now in use as school. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystack to one gable and slightly projecting stone stack to rear, cut-stone copings having finials to kneelers. Roughly dressed walls and quoins. Square-headed window openings, some with cut-stone mullions, all having sloping tooled sills and block-and-start surrounds, and replacement uPVC windows. Rear has replacement timber windows to first floor, and small-pane timber casement windows to ground floor. Tudor arch door opening to front elevation, with replacement timber panelled door with fanlight, cut-stone steps and set in chamfered stone surround with keystone having inscribed date '1848', with flanking sidelights having moulded chamfered stone surrounds, all under carved continuous label-moulding. Remaining cast-iron gate to front of site. Set within former workhouse complex.

  Detached five-bay single-storey vernacular house with attic storey, built c.1800, with flat-roof porch to front (east) elevation. Pitched scolloped reed thatch roof with decorative raised ridge, and low smooth rendered chimneystacks. Pebbledashed rendered walls with smooth rendered plinth course and gables. Square-headed window openings with tooled limestone sills, smooth rendered surrounds and replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed door opening with smooth rendered surround and replacement uPVC door. Detached two-bay two-storey outbuilding to rear with pitched corrugated-iron roof, coursed rubble limestone walls, square-headed loop window, square-headed door opening with corrugated-iron door, and square-headed loft door opening with timber battened door. Detached single-bay single-storey outbuilding to south, with pitched slate roof, rendered walls, and square-headed opening with timber battened door.
