  Description

  Standing 5m W of the church (GA029-017002-) on W boundary wall of the graveyard. This ruined circular tower (D 4.8m, H 16.5m), which stands on a plinth, was a least three storeys in height. It is built of roughly cut and regularly coursed limestone save for the plain round-headed doorway on NE side which is of sandstone. This stands 4.55m above ground level. There are traces of a window on NNE side in the broken wall just above 2nd-floor level.   Description

  Part of the early ecclesiastical remains (GA029-017004-) at Kilbenan. The standing remains are those of a poorly preserved rectangular church (E-W; 23.2m, Wth 8.3m), probably of late medieval date: according to Harbison (1975, 93-4), it was built by the Franciscans. While both gables survive to their full height, most of N wall, and E end of S are destroyed. There is a round arch doorway towards W end of S wall and the base of a possible window at W end of same. The E gable contains a blocked twin-light cusped ogee-headed window; a burial vault has been built up against its outer face. A series of beam slots on the inner face of W gable indicate the former presence of a loft at this end. Three flat-headed opes are visible in this gable: a tiny window set off-centre on ground floor, a larger centrally placed rectangular window on first, and a blocked ope at the same level to S of the latter. Internally, there is a dividing wall at W end. A number of architectural fragments were also noted, including a decorated arch fragment. • GA029-017004 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  At N end of a house cluster in rolling grassland overlooking bogland to SW. Known locally as 'Kilbenan', this Nat. Mon. is the site of an early monastery founded by St Benen or Benignus. A disciple of St Patrick (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 388), he is reputed to have been granted 'the fortress of Dun Lughaid' for the purpose by a local chieftain (Leask 1977, 13). According to Harbison (1975, 93-4), 'the Franciscan founded a monastery here in 1428'. The visible remains comprise a church (GA029-017002-) and round tower (GA029-017001-), both of which stand in a small irregularly shaped graveyard (GA029-017003-). A holy well (GA029-131----) lies 110m to NW and a cairn (GA029-137----) 150m to NNE. The gently curving td. boundary to W of the church may mark the line of a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure.   Description

  Part of the early ecclesiastical remains (GA029-017004-) at Kilbenan; it lies 110m NW of the church (GA029-017002-). A poorly preserved holy well enclosed by a rectangular mortared stone wall (WNW-ESE 2.8m, NNE-SSW 2.2m, H 1.2m) which has collapsed along W half. Entrance in SE wall. A famous 'patrún' was held here on the last Sunday of July until the early 19th C when the parish priest, 'scenting pagan practices', suppressed it (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 448).   Description

  On the summit of an esker ridge. This monument was excavated in 1935 (Riley 1936). It consisted of a circular mound (D 7.6m, H 1.2m) constructed of alternating layers of earth and stones and gravel. Almost at the centre was an inverted cordoned urn containing cremated bones and a bronze razor. Numerous animal bones were also found, as well as seven blue glass beads. No visible surface trace survives. A similar mound (GA029-136----) lay c. 200m to SE.   Description

  Close to the summit of a ridge, c. 200m SE of another tumulus (GA029-135----). It consisted of a low circular mound (D c. 8m, He. 1m) when excavated in 1935 (Riley 1936). This revealed that it was constructed by adding extra soil to a natural knoll. Four extended inhumations, placed in shallow unlined trenches, were found. Associated finds included several corroded iron fragments, one possible shield boss and animal bones. No visible surface trace survives.   On a rise in undulating grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S c. 33m, E-W c. 27m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse which survive from N to E and from S to W. A pathway cuts the monument at E and S, and quarrying has encroached upon the enclosing elements from W to N. A field wall overlies the outer bank from SW to W. This is overlain by a modern bank in S sector. A gap at NE appears modern, and there is a shed immediately outside the monument at E.   Description

  In pastureland c. 112m to the SW of the re-aligned river Clare. In July 2018 skeletal remains were uncovered during the course of gravel-quarrying operations on a low natural mound in an esker ridge. On investigation by staff from the National Museum of Ireland they were found to be those of an extended inhumed individual, orientated E-W, and though disturbed by the digger almost the entire skeleton was recovered. No grave cut was evident and no grave goods were found. Further examination of the bones indicated that they were those of a male, roughly between 20 to 25 years of age and radiocarbon dates indicated an early medieval date. • Kilcreevanty Bridge, bridge, 1750–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Limestone bridge, built c.1770, over River Clare, comprising eight round arches to west end and two to east, all over land, and with single wide segmental arch of c.1840 to river proper. Older section of bridge built of coursed rubble with rubble voussoirs, and later arch is of rusticated limestone with heavily rusticated voussoirs and raised quoins. Soffits of river arch are gunnelled.

  Description

  Limestone railway bridge, built c.1880, over Athenry to Claremorris railway line. Walls of large blocks of rusticated limestone, with similar voussoirs to arch, sloping approach walls and parapet copings.
