• KE029-158 Enclosure
  Description

  'This recorded site is described in the RMP manual as an enclosure. It is not marked on any edition of the OS and must originally have been identified from aerial photography. The site is located at an elevation of 35m on the top of a limestone ridge that runs east-west through the townland of Ballingowan. The site affords expansive views in all directions particularly to the north-east where the three main peaks of the Stacks Mountains and the pass between Kilmore and Ballincollig Hill can clearly be seen, and to the southern half of the compass, where the full expanse of the Sliabh Mis from Baurtregaunm in the west to Knockawaddra in the east dominate the skyline. Of particular note is the way the view of the more easterly and larger cairn on the saddle below the summit of Knockawaddra is underlined by a mountain spur in the foreground, which would block the view of the cairn from a lower elevation.The site itself is very denuded but is clearly visible. The enclosing element is a very flattened stone and earth bank, best preserved at the north where it is 5.5m wide, 0,60m high externally and 0.40m high internally. On the western side this bank has been incorporated into a curved field boundary and material from the bank has been scraped together to form a field bank. On the eastern side the bank takes the form of an enhanced scarp, where the natural slope of the land down to the east has been utilised. At the south the site is cut by an east-west running field wall and underlying bank, which forms the northern side of a large oval enclosure not recorded on the RMP [KE029-251----]. There are no visible internal features and no evidence of a ditch either internally or externally. The site has internal dimensions of 72m N-S and 71m E-W.' • KE029-265 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  'Approximately 200m south – south-east of the embanked enclosure at Ballingowan, this previously unrecorded site is located on a limestone outcrop or reef on the eastern outskirts of Tralee. The site is oval or egg shaped the narrower end to the west and measures 155m E-W and 104m N-S. Except for the eastern end, the perimeter of the site is marked by a modern stone wall, which sits on an earlier stone and earth bank. This wall also cuts the site from N-S at a point 40m from its eastern end. The original bank of the site can be seen beneath the wall particularly on the southern side where the wall has been constructed on the inner edge of the bank. The bank under the wall on the southern side is on average 4.5m wide and 0.35m high externally. The landowner informed me that much of the stone for the wall was in fact derived from the remains of the bank. At the eastern end the bank is clearly visible and similar to the bank of recorded enclosure KE029-158---- takes the form of an enhanced scarp. It measures 7.5m in maximum width and due to the natural slope/scarp of the ridge, is 1.2m on average, in external height and 0.45m in internal height. Immediately inside the bank the limestone bedrock is exposed in places and has clearly been quarried from a number of pits, possibly to construct the bank, which contains stone and earth. There is no evidence of a ditch. as are a number of depressions and holes which may have served as quarry ditches to provide material for the bank. • KE029-306 Burnt mound
  Description

  'Situated in a large reclaimed field immediately to the east of a small tributary of the River Lee, which was deep ploughed in 1997, are a series of low stone-filled mounds. Boulder clay is obvious where the top of the mound has been denuded, this probably being the result of the sod being turned. Some evidence of burnt stone is apparent.....[the] fulacht fiadh is immediately to the north of an east/west field boundary, and as in the other cases, is substantially destroyed. Its total dimensions are 6.50m N-S by 8.50m E-W and is 0.20m in height. A disturbed central trough area measures 4.00m E-W by 1.00m N-S and opens to the west. A trough area opens to the west, measuring 3.00m N-S by 1.00m E-W and is 0.40m below the crest of the mound. Again boulder clay is in evidence on the disturbed top of the mound, showing that deep ploughing was carried out on this field.'   'Situated in a large reclaimed field immediately to the east of a small tributary of the River Lee, which was deep ploughed in 1997, are a series of low stone-filled mounds. Some evidence of burnt stone is apparent.....the largest of the three mounds [see KE029-307----, KE029-306----] is also the most northerly example in this field. It measures 8.50m N-S by 7.50m E-W and survives to a height of 0.25m above surrounding ground level. The trough, which opens to the west, is 3.50m N-S by 1.00m E-W. The bottom of this trough is 0.45m below the crest of the mound. As in the previous examples this site has been much disturbed due to land reclaimation and deep ploughing.' • KE029-317 Pit alignment
  Description

  Discovered in the course of archaeological excavations undertaken by Rubicon Heritage Services in advance of the construction of the N22 Tralee Bypass. The remains comprised two rows of pits that appeared to form an avenue on an alignment which was approximately 8 degrees S of an E-W axis. The rows were not perfectly parallel with each other and the distance between them was 8.6m at the E (at the limit of the excavated area) and gradually narrowed to a minimum of 5.1 m at the W. The N row contained 16 pits (0.05m – 0.34m in depth) and the S row, 18 pits (0.11m – 0.42m in depth). The rows each measured c.30m in length but it is likely that they extended further to the E beyond the road-take and this hypothesis is supported by the results of geophysical survey in this area. The space between the pits averaged 1m. No datable artifacts or material suitable for radiocarbon dating was retrieved from the pits. These pits are likely to have functioned as post-pits, as there was evidence in a number of the features for post packing and post-pipes.
