  Description

  'This is a kidney-shaped mound located in a wet marshy field, which does not appear to have been farmed in recent years Its overall dimensions are 12m N-S by 10m E-W by 1.20m in height. The trough area opens to the west and encloses an area which measures 4.50m N-S by 3.00m E-W. A small stream is located 10m to the south of the site. • KE029-258 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  'Located in a reclaimed field on the immediate north side of the River Lee is the remains of a partially destroyed ring-barrow. Only the northern half of this barrow survives, the southern half obviously being destroyed by the extensive reclaimation which has occurred in this field. The remains of several field drains can be seen crossing the area. Despite the intense reclaimation the field is still quite wet, and probably prone to flooding. Most of the internal platform survives and measures 15m E-W. It is enclosed by a fosse and external bank, which survive from east through north to north-west. The fosse is 2.00m wide and 0.30m below the central platform, and 0.40m below the crest of the bank. This bank has a maximum width on its eastern side of 3.00m with an external height of 0.40m. A total diameter can be gauged from N/W to S/E where the site measures 22m. Though partially levelled, enough above ground remains are visible to allow this to be identified as a ring-barrow. • KE029-294 Ring-ditch
  Description

  'Monitoring of topsoil stripping on a development site at Manor East uncovered a penannular ditch enclosing an area measuring 6.4m by 5.3m. The ditch itself was between 0.4 – 0.3m in width. A gap 4.5m wide occurred at the north - north-west. The ditch was V-shaped in section and no archaeological strata were noted in the fill. The only internal feature was a pit measuring 1.05m by 0.84m and 0.18m deep located off centre to the west. Charcoal was evident on the surface of the fill, and subsequent excavation showed an upper layer of clay with flecks of charcoal and a lower layer of charred wood and burnt clay, suggesting burning took place in the pit. Charcoal from the central pit produced an unusually late radiocarbon date of 688-754 calibrated AD.' Description from ‘The Prehistoric Settlement of the Lee Valley, Tralee, Co.
