  Description

  In pasture, on a low rise. A circular slightly raised area (diam. c. 20m) surrounded by a fosse and a slight external bank is visible as a shadow site in an aerial photograph taken in 1956 (ACAP, V 245/96-7).   Description

  At the S side of a road, opposite Holy Cross Convent. There are no visible remains of this well. In 1945 it was recorded that St. Margaret's Well was 'roofed with stone, about 4ft. [1.21m] in height, and 27ft [8.22m] in circumference' (ITA). At that time a stone stairway leading to the well was 'still serviceable' and parishioners made pilgrimages to the well on the 25 March and 15 August each year (ITA). It was also recorded in the 1940s that on 15th August five 'rounds' were made and a decade of the rosary said for each round; on completion of the 'rounds' people bathed their faces or their eyes with the well water, then drank some of it and took some away with them (Schools Manuscript, Co.   Description

  Detached eight-bay two-storey Gothic Revival style convent with dormer attic, built 1850, on a quadrangular-plan about a courtyard. Comprising five-bay two-storey central block with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting open porch to centre, single-bay double-height flanking bay to left and single-bay two-storey gabled projecting end bay to left. Three-bay two-storey side elevation to west. Four-bay two-storey return to rear to north-west. Single-bay double-height projecting end bay to right containing private chapel with diagonal stepped buttresses, single-bay single-storey lean-to entrance bay to west and three-bay nave elevation to east. Seven-bay two-storey return to rear to north-east on an L-shaped plan with five-bay two-storey range with dormer attic at right angles to west. Extended to east, c. 1920, comprising three-bay two-storey terminating range with six-bay single-storey flat-roofed return to rear to north. Pitched slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, limestone ashlar chimneystacks, gable ashlar copings, springers, cast-iron profiled gutters, hoppers and downpipes. Green limestone rubble stone walls with buttered cement mortar, limestone ashlar plinth quoins and buttresses. Square-headed windows with limestone lintels, sills and reveals. Timber four-over-four pane sliding sash windows at first floor. Mullion and transom ground floor windows with hood mouldings. Pointed arches to chapel with tracery and hood mouldings. Retaining interior features. Detached nine-bay single-storey single-pitched glazed green house, built c. 1850, to west. Gateway, built c. 1850, to south comprising limestone ashlar piers with cast-iron Celtic Cross style finials having decorative cast-iron gates.

  Description

  Detached H-plan five-bay single-storey Victorian former schoolhouse with half-dormer attic, dated 1888, now in use as pastoral centre. Comprising three-bay single-storey central block with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch to centre and single-bay single-storey gabled projecting flanking bays. Three-bay single-storey side elevations to north-west and to south-east. Single-bay single-storey recessed end bay to south-east. Three-bay single-storey recessed wing to north-west with single-storey canted bay window to north-west elevation having single-bay single-storey turret over on a square plan with glazed lantern and saddleback roof. Pair of single-bay single-storey returns to rear to north-east. Entrance reoriented to north-east in late twentieth century having three-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting entrance bay. Pitched purple slate roofs with red clay ridge tiles, ashlar chimneystacks, gable ashlar copings, iron finials, cast-iron profiled gutters, hoppers, downpipes and saddleback roof to turret with iron cresting. Green limestone rubble stone walls with grey limestone ashlar plinth band, quoins, springers, and having name and date plaque to doorcase. Timber openwork panels to turret now glazed-in. Limestone ashlar surrounds, mullions and transoms to replacement timber windows. Triple windows to end bays. Projecting gabled doorcase with ashlar dressings and steps to replacement timber double-leaf door and overlight. Set in ground of Mercy convent.
