• KE066-099 Ogham stone (present location)
  Description

  On a grassy verge, at the NW corner of the Bishop's House, Killarney. An upright ogham stone (H 1.4m; 0.51m x 0.13m) of sandstone, oriented NE-SW. This stone is not in its original position and though its precise provenance is unknown, it is said to have been found in the bed of a stream in the townland of Ballyeightragh (see KE043-250----), on the Dingle peninsula (see Cuppage 1986, 253, no. 796). The inscription is on its SW corner, with strokes extending onto the NW face. It begins c. 0.34m from the present ground level, continuing around the apex and down the NE corner. It was read by Macalister (1945, 162-3) as 'M A Q I - L I A G M A Q I E R C A, SON OF LIAG SON OF ERCA' though Cuppage (ibid.) noted that the final A could no longer be read and that the first I had been damaged where a notch had been cut into the edge of the stone. There is a small notch (H 0.12m), 0.36m from the base of the stone and possible sharpening marks on the NW and SE faces. It was recorded in the 1940s that this ogham stone was presented to the Bishop of Kerry in 1919 and moved to St. Brendan's seminary, Killarney (ITA). According to local information, it has since been moved a short distance to its present position.   Description

  Freestanding cruciform-plan double- and triple-height early-English Gothic Revival style Roman Catholic cathedral, built 1842-1855, designed by A.W.N. Pugin and later extended by Ashlin & Coleman. Comprising twelve-bay triple-height nave with, twelve-bay double-height lean-to aisles to north and to south elevations, single-bay double-height projecting chapels to north-west and to south-west, single-bay triple-height transepts to north and to south, three-bay triple-height lower chapel to south-east, single-bay full-height corner turrets on square plans to east gable with limestone ashlar open belfries and conical roofs, two-bay two-storey projecting sacristy to north-east and entrance bay to west gable end having full-height corner turrets on square plans with limestone ashlar open belfries and conical roofs. Extended, 1908-1912, with two-bay section added to west of nave and single-bay two-stage central tower added to crossing on a square plan with limestone ashlar octagonal spire having corner pinnacles. Pitched slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, gable parapets with crucifix finials, profiled cast-iron gutters on iron brackets and lean-to side aisles. Coursed rubble stone walls with limestone ashlar dressings. Single lancets with limestone surrounds and hood mouldings. Paired lancets to aisles. Paired lancets with trefoil heads to side chapels. Rose windows to transepts. Pointed arched entrance and flanking doorcases with stepped reveals and timber boarded double-leaf doors. Cruciform-plan interior with aisles divided from nave by pointed arched arcades on limestone columns. Open cruck-framed ceiling to nave. Chancel reordered. Gateway, built c. 1855, to south comprising six limestone ashlar Gothic Revival style panelled piers with limestone ashlar intermediary piers having sections of cast-iron railings.

• The Old Monastery, monastery, 1835–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached quadrangular-plan ten-bay two-storey Gothic Revival style former monastery with dormer attic, dated 1837, about an internal courtyard. Designed by A.W.N. Pugin. Now in use as training centre. Comprising seven-bay two-storey central block with two-bay double-height gabled projecting end bay to left and single-bay two-storey gabled advanced end bay to right. Nine-bay two-storey side elevations including three-bay double-height chapel to south-west, seven-bay range to east and five-bay single-storey wing to north-east. Single-bay single-storey projecting glazed porch added, courtyard glazed over and dormer attic added in late twentieth century to accommodate use as training centre. Steeply pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, ashlar chimneystacks, profiled cast-iron gutters, ashlar bellcote to south, and replacement hoppers and downpipes. Random limestone walls with grey limestone dressings including plinth, eaves, quoins, inset carved crest to north west bay, datestone and niche above entrance. Limestone ashlar surrounds to trefoil openings at ground floor and pointed arch openings at first floor. Pointed doorway with limestone surround. Timber one-over-one pane sliding sash windows and glazed door. Gateway, built c. 1840, to south comprising three limestone ashlar Gothic Revival style piers with cast-iron cross finials having cast-iron gates.

  Description

  Pair of semi-detached three-bay single-storey houses with dormer attics, built c. 1840, with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porches to centre having ogee-headed door openings. Number 6 renovated and extended to left in latter part of twentieth century with single-bay single-storey end bay. Number 5 renovated and refenestrated in latter part of twentieth century with window openings remodelled to dormer attic. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, overhanging eaves and verges, curvilinear bargeboards to porches, ashlar chimneystacks, gabled dormers to No. 6 and remodelled dormers to No. 5. Painted roughcast rendered walls with render plinth. Painted sills, render reveals and surrounds to replacement windows. Replacement doors. Sections of cast-iron railings, c. 1840, to forecourt to west.

  Group of four terraced four-bay single-storey houses, built c. 1850, with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porches. Individually renovated and extended. Dormer attic added to number 3. Pitched slate roofs with clipped courses to porches, clay ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks, overhanging eaves and verges, curvilinear bargeboards and finials to porch. Painted rendered walls. Painted stone sills to replacement windows. Replacement doors. Rubble stone garden walls to site.

  Group of four terraced three-bay single-storey houses, built c. 1875, with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting shared porch to centre of terrace and single-bay single-storey gabled projecting end bays to ends of terrace. Individually renovated and refenestrated in late twentieth century. Pitched slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, ashlar chimneystacks, hipped at rear, and having decorative bargeboards. Coursed rubble stone walls with ashlar quoins. Limestone ashlar flat arches, reveals and sills to replacement uPVC windows. Glazed porch added to north house. Low rubble stone walls to road with stone-on-edge coping.

  Detached ten-bay two-storey Gothic Revival style seminary, built c. 1860, on a quadrangular-plan about an internal courtyard. Comprising six-bay two-storey central block, single-bay double-height gabled advanced flanking bay to right, single-bay two-storey advanced end bay to left having single-storey box bay window to ground floor and two-bay two-storey gabled projecting end bay to right. Ten-bay two-storey side elevations with single-bay two-storey gabled advanced end bays to west elevation. Six-bay two-storey range to north. Extended to east, c. 1910, comprising three-bay two-storey linking bay with twelve-bay three-storey wing to east, two-bay three-storey gabled advanced end bay to east and pair of single-bay three-storey flat-roofed lower returns to rear to north. Extended to east in latter part of twentieth century with five-bay single-storey flat-roofed chapel at right angles. Pitched slate roofs with gable parapets, clay ridge tiles, ashlar chimneystacks, profiled cast-iron gutters, hoppers, square downpipes and iron finials. Random rubble stone walls with limestone ashlar dressings. Paired windows with pointed arches at ground floor and square-headed at first floor having limestone ashlar surrounds with contrasting voussoirs at ground floor. Timber one-over-one pane sliding sash windows. Oriel window to south-west corner with balustrade.   Detached U-plan nine-bay two-storey Gothic Revival style Bishop’s Palace with dormer attic, built c. 1865, possibly over basement. Comprising five-bay two-storey central block with single-bay two-storey gabled entrance bay to centre having tripartite lancet arch door opening to ground floor approached by flight of steps and flanked by two-bay two-storey gabled advanced end bays. Two-bay two-storey side elevations to east and to west having single-storey canted bay windows to ground floor. Single-bay three-storey tower to west elevation on a square plan with machicolated pyramidal roof. Pair of four-bay two-storey returns to rear to north. Four-bay two-storey over part-raised base block with dormer attic at right angles to north-west containing private chapel. Refenestrated, subdivided and remodelled internally in 1994, to accommodate part use as presbytery. Steeply pitched slate roof with clay ridge comb, ashlar chimneystacks, gable copper-clad copings, cast-iron hoppers, gutters, downpipes, gabled dormers to west and north wings and pyramidal roof to tower with two iron finials. Rubble stone walls with limestone ashlar dressings and plinth. Machicolated upper stage of tower with ashlar corbels. Limestone surrounds to replacement uPVC windows. Trefoil windows to gables. Three-bay open arcaded porch with pointed arches, coffered ceiling to porch, limestone steps, perron and double-leaf door with decorative strap hinges. Bay window to west façade. Freestanding Ogham stone to north-west. Ashlar gate piers, cast-iron gates and adjacent single-storey gate lodge to site.

  Detached L-plan nine-bay three-storey convent, built c. 1875, with pointed-arch door opening to centre having limestone ashlar tripartite doorcase approached by flight of steps. Two-bay single-storey recessed end bay to right. Two-bay three-storey side elevations to north and to south. Bellcote over rear elevation to east. Four-bay three-storey lower return to east. Two-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting glazed porch added to east elevation of end bay. Attached six-bay double-height Gothic Revival style chapel, built c. 1875, with five-bay single-storey lean-to aisle to south elevation and two-bay single-storey entrance transepts to north and to south elevations. Pitched and hipped slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, iron crucifix finials, ashlar chimneystacks to end walls, intermediate chimneystacks removed, profiled cast-iron gutters, gutter-iron hoppers, downpipes and clay ridge comb to nave of chapel. Coursed rubble stone walls with limestone ashlar plinth course, quoins and moulded limestone eaves course on brackets. Roughcast rendered walls to rear. Limestone surrounds and sills with rubble relieving arches to timber two-over-two pane sliding sash windows. Corbelled heads to ground floor windows with matching profile to upper sliding sash windows. Pointed arch limestone doorcase with leaded glass panels to sidelights. Timber panelled window shutters to interior. Gateway, built c. 1875, to south-west comprising pair of cast-iron piers with cast-iron gates and railings.

  Detached U-plan seven-bay single-storey Victorian national school, dated 1886, comprising five-bay single-storey central block with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch to centre, copper-clad lantern over to apex, and single-bay single-storey gabled projecting end bays. Four-bay single-storey side elevations to east and to west. Pitched artificial slate roof with lead valley flashings, gable limestone copings and springers and having lead and timber Gothic Revival style lantern with iron finial. Red brick English garden wall bond walls with limestone plinth, sill course and having limestone name and date plaque above entrance. Limestone sills, hood mouldings and red brick flat or pointed arches to replacement aluminium windows. Projecting gabled doorcase with limestone dressings. Two sidelights retaining timber two-pane windows. Detached single-bay single-storey red brick outbuilding, built c. 1890, to north-east retaining original aspect with single-bay single-storey side elevations.
