A total of seven ogham stones were incorporated into a souterrain (KE065-078----), marked ‘Cave’ on the OS maps, discovered in 1838 by workmen building a field boundary across a slight rise in Dunloe Castle demesne... It was roofed by nine slabs, six of which bore ogham inscriptions. One of the larger ogham stones had cracked in antiquity and was supported by a seventh, which stood upright in the souterrain passage. A number of bones and skulls, some of which were reputedly human, were found in the souterrain. In 1940 the ogham stones were removed from the site by the OPW, and were erected close to a public roadway nearby. The souterrain was subsequently filled back and no surface trace remains. (A) This stone (KE065-078001-) stands 1.2m high, and is up to .3m in width and .11m in thickness. It stood upside down in the souterrain passage supporting (2) (see KE065-078004-), which served as a lintel. Macalister (1945, 193, no. 199) read the inscription as: CUNACENA. A small, encircled, equal-armed cross occurs on that face of the stone which was uppermost when it served as a lintel in the souterrain (Graves 1886, 605). A pocked rectangular space on the left side of the sinister angle was interpreted by Macalister as indicating the removal of an erroneous character (1945, 193, no. 198). • KE065-077 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diam. 37.7m N-S, 36m E-W Situated on the lower NE facing slopes of Ardfergus Hill, this poorly preserved univallate rath is heavily overgrown. The enclosing bank is somewhat defaced, averaging 1.1m high and 1.5m in basal width. It is best preserved at NE,where it stands 1.55m high and has a basal width of 2m. On average the bank rises 1m above the interior of the site, which slopes down markedly to E. No definite entrance is discernible. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. • KE065-078 Souterrain
  Description

  This souterrain, marked ‘Cave’ on the OS maps, was discovered in 1838 by workmen building a field boundary across a slight rise in Dunloe Castle demesne, a short distance W of the River Loe. A total of seven ogham stones were incorporated into its structure. Atkinson and Romilly Allen visited it individually several decades later, and recorded that the accessible section of its passage was c. 5.7m in overall length and averaged l.3m in height (1866, 523-4; 1892, 166-70). Access was gained through an opening at S, where the passage was 7 feet (2.15m) wide. From here it curved to NE, decreasing in width to 3 feet 3 inches (1m). The walls were of drystone construction and inclined slightly to reduce the passage width at roof level. It was roofed by nine slabs, six of which bore ogham inscriptions. One of the larger ogham stones had cracked in antiquity and was supported by a seventh, which stood upright in the souterrain passage. A number of bones and skulls, some of which were reputedly human, were found in the souterrain. In 1940 the ogham stones were removed from the site by the OPW, and were erected close to a public roadway nearby. The souterrain was subsequently filled back and no surface trace remains.   A total of seven ogham stones were incorporated into a souterrain (KE065-078----), marked ‘Cave’ on the OS maps, discovered in 1838 by workmen building a field boundary across a slight rise in Dunloe Castle demesne... It was roofed by nine slabs, six of which bore ogham inscriptions. One of the larger ogham stones had cracked in antiquity and was supported by a seventh, which stood upright in the souterrain passage. A number of bones and skulls, some of which were reputedly human, were found in the souterrain. In 1940 the ogham stones were removed from the site by the OPW, and were erected close to a public roadway nearby. The souterrain was subsequently filled back and no surface trace remains. (1) This stone (present location KE065-041001-) stands 2.1m high, and is up to .52m in width and .2m in thickness. The well-preserved inscription on the dexter angle reads: DEGOS MAQI MOCOI TOICAKI. The S is inscribed on the broad face of the stone and is obviously a rectified omission (Macalister 1945, 193, no. 197). A number of the consonant scores do not reach the angle, and the forfid K is used. A small, encircled, equal-armed cross occurs on that face of the stone which was uppermost when it served as a lintel in the souterrain (Graves 1886, 605). A pocked rectangular space on the left side of the sinister angle was interpreted by Macalister as indicating the removal of an erroneous character (1945, 193, no. 198). Neither the second M nor the E, which is apparently represented by the forfid symbol, are now clearly visible.   Description

  This ogham stone (see KE057-078002-) formerly lay in the chancel of Kilbonane Church (KE057-078001-) and was moved to Coolmagort where it is on display with seven other ogham stones from the nearby souterrain (Macalister 1945, 235, no. 241). It has three lines of ogham inscription; one on an edge, another along a line scratched down along the face of the stone with a smaller line half its length beside it. There is a third inscription on the other edge. The inscription is unclear at the repaired break across the middle. According to Macalister (1903, 175; 1945, 235-7), the main inscription on the face, including the smaller line, is independent of the inscription on the angles. Macalister (ibid.), read the inscription on the face as: NIR*** MN[I]DAGNIESSICONIDDALA AMIT BAIDAGNI. Macalister deciphers the inscription on the dexter angle as: B[AID]AGNI MAQI ADDILONA and on the sinister angle as: NAGUNI MUCO BASIDANI (ibid.). • KE065-079 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Toberchreest/Tobar Críosta: This shallow, slab-lined well is located in woodland close to the W bank of the River Loe, a tributary of the Laune. It occurs at the base of a domed structure, roughly built in stone, which stands 1.52m high and measures 1.6m in diameter. The structure is surmounted by a modern iron cross. Lying 1m to E is a thin slab, .37m x .31m, which features crosses on both faces; on the first is a small Latin cross, with expanded terminals, and the letters J, W and D beneath, while the second face features a similar, though larger, cross. Alternatively known as St Brigid’s Well, rounds were formerly made here on Good Friday (CKFC, 1948). A magical trout was locally reputed to live in the well (Hitchcock RIA MS 24 E 13). Folklore collected from Cullenagh Upper School recorded the following tradition; 'In the middle of a bog in the townland near Dunlo is a holy well called the Well of Christ. People go there on trips every Good Friday. It is not known in what direction the place is called the Well of Christ. The water rising from the well is nice and is said to be a good drink. It is a cure for blindness. Everyone who leaves there leaves something behind or something like that. • KE065-117 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diam. 22m N-S, 21m E-W This bivallate rath is located in pasture adjacent to a modern roadway. Mature trees crown the tops of both banks and its interior is largely obscured with dense vegetation. A high wall bounds the S side of the roadway and overlies the bank at NE. The outer bank rises to an average external height of .8m, has a basal width of 2.9m and falls a maximum of 1.4m to the base of the flat-bottomed, 4.75m wide, fosse. The flat-topped inner bank is largely composed of earth and gravel, rises 1.75m high externally, measures 4.5m in basal width and up to .8m above the featureless interior of the site. A probable causeway, 2.8m wide, traverses the fosse at NW and may represent the location of the original entrance. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.   Description

  Freestanding double-height Gothic Revival style Catholic church, built c. 1885, with four-bay nave and single-bay single-storey gabled projecting chapel to north-east corner. Renovated and extended, in late twentieth century with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch added to north gable end and single-bay single-storey flat-roofed sacristy projection added to south elevation. Pitched artificial slate roof with gable coping, north gable is stepped, limestone bellcote to north gable, open eaves and replacement rainwater goods. Cement roughcast rendered walls with haunched buttresses to corners and to sides, with painted stone dressings. Paired lancets with painted concrete sills and limestone ashlar surround. Hood moulding to north window flanked by quatrefoils having inset mosaic to window surround. Render hood moulding to chancel window. Original limestone door surround now enclosed by porch. Single volume interior with exposed timber trusses and compartmented ceiling. Gallery at north end with porch below. Pilastered side walls with timber cornice over. Gothic Revival marble reredos. Chancel re-ordered. Freestanding cut-stone Celtic Cross style grave marker, c. 1900, to site. Gateway, built c. 1885, to north comprising pair of roughcast piers with wrought-iron gates.
