- KE055-004 Midden
Description
This shell midden was located on the N facing shore-line a short distance W of the landward end of Cromane Spit and c. 1.2km S of KE055-002----. It was composed of cockle, mussel and limpet shells and measured 1.4m long and up to .1m thick. Occurring at a depth of .5m below the top of the sand-face, it was eroded away by 1994. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 5. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
- KE055-005 Midden
Description
This shell midden occurs in a low, eroding sand-face at the head of a stony beach, c. 600m S of the previous lite. The exposed deposit is 4.2m long and has a maximum thickness of .08m. It is predominantly composed of mussel shells, but some cockle, whelk and periwinkle also occur. The midden material occurs in a compact spread of brown sand, .4m below present ground level, and rests directly on a dark peaty layer. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 6. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
- KE055-006 Midden
Description
On the same eroded sand-face as KE055-005----, and 13.7m to W, is a shell midden which is 3.8m long and .15m in maximum thickness. It is composed predominantly of mussel shells, with some cockles and periwinkles also occurring, as well as small quantities of charcoal. It occurs in a light-coloured, intermittently stony layer of sand, which is located .25m below present ground level. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 7. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
- KE055-007 Midden
Description
On a low cliff-face, 33.5m SW of KE055-006----, a thick layer of sand is sealed by a black, sticky sod layer. Resting on the latter is a midden, exposed for a length of 13.5m. It achieves a maximum thickness of .2m and occurs below 1.4m to 1.8m of sand. The midden material is predominantly composed of mussel shells, though periwinkles and a small quantity of stone occur throughout. A thin layer of sand near the centre of the midden separates this deposit from a less substantial layer of shells above, which appears to be composed exclusively of cockles. It has a maximum thickness of .2m and is exposed for c. 3m. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 8. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
- KE055-008 Midden
Description
The most southerly of the Dooaghs middens is located in a low cliff-face above the shoreline immediately NE of Caragh Creek estuary. It occurs intermittently along a 45m stretch and directly overlies a black sod layer at its S end. Elsewhere it is separated from this layer by underlying deposits of sand, and lenses of sand occasionally separate the midden itself. The midden varies from .04m to .3m thick and is covered by an average depth of .8m of sand. It is chiefly composed of cockle and mussel shells, with some periwinkles and stone occurring throughout. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 9. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
