Description
Killeen Burial Ground: This site is located in poor pasture on a low spit which projects S into Caragh Creek. No longer in use as a burial ground by the late nineteenth century, it consists of a wedge-shaped area, 12m N-S x 23m E-W, which is raised on average .5m above surrounding ground level. At least fifty small uninscribed grave-markers are arranged in N-S rows throughout the site, many of them obscured by overgrowth. Numerous boulders also occur, and a single blackthorn bush is centrally located in the site's interior. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1042. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
