Description
On the rugged W slopes of Killelan, at Doulus Head. A rectangular sheepfold overlies an earlier circular structure, possibly a hut. Fragments of two quern-stones were found c. 18m to NW (Henry 1957, 59). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1310. Description
On open mountain terrain, in the vicinity of old field fences, on the S slopes of Killelan overlooking Valencia Harbour. A pair of overgrown conjoined huts of corbelled drystone construction, on a stone-revetted terrace. Situated adjacent at E, a rectangular hut (KE079-002003-), probably later. The larger conjoined hut KE079-002---- at E is of circular plan and measures 4.6m x 4.5m in internal diameter. The entrance may be located at E, but the fill of stone collapse makes identification uncertain. The lintelled passage at W communicates with the smaller subcircular hut at W and measures .7m wide. Rubble infill blocks its W end. The second hut measures 5.8m x 3.6m internally. The rectangular hut, abutting the external face of larger conjoined hut at E, survives as an overgrown, stony bank with an entrance at S. D: 4.35m x 3.9m. A sheepfold is located against its S side. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1311. Description
Downhill from KE079-003---- and adjacent to an old field wall. The collapsed foundations of a circular, corbelled drystone hut, situated on an artificial terrace. A lintelled niche occurs in the inner wall-face at NW and the entrance is obscured beneath rubble infill. D: 4.3m x 3.5m. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1313. - KE079-005 Hut site
Description
Close to the cliff-edge W of Coosbrista, on the S slopes of Killelan mountain. In rough pasture, a pair of conjoined huts of corbelled drystone construction. The larger E hut KE079-005---- is subcircular in plan and measures 5.1m x 4.5m internally. Its wall stands to a maximum internal height of 1m and varies from 1.6m to 3.1m thick. Three lintelled drystone chambers, which may be secondary, occur in the N sector of the wall. The lintelled entrance at E measures .6m high, and is .8m wide and 3.2m long. A double lintel occurs on its inner side, the uppermost forming the base of a small wall-niche. The lintelled passage at W, communicating with the W hut, measures .65m high, .8m wide and 2.5m long. The double lintel at its E end also functions as a wall-niche. The W hut is of circular plan and measures 4m x 3.5m internally. Its wall stands to a maximum internal height of .65m and averages 1.5m thick. There is some evidence for an offset at W. Its interior has been modified for use as a sheepfold. Stone debris fills the interior of both huts. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. - KE079-006 Hut site
Description
About 200m E of KE079-005----, situated on an artificial terrace revetted with drystone masonry on its S side. A pair of circular conjoined huts of corbelled drystone construction. The E hut KE079-006----measures 3.9m x 3.7m internally and its wall stands to a maximum internal height of 1.2m. An entrance at SE, .8m wide, is marked by a pair of uprights at its inner end. A lintelled passage at W communicates with the W hut and measures .5m high, .5m wide and 1.3m long. This hut, larger than the first, measures 4.3m in internal diameter and has been coniderably modified and rebuilt. The basal courses of three mural chambers along the internal wall-face suggest that these features may be original and that the original entrance may have been at SE. The present entrance is through a gap at N. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Description
A circular and a rectangular hut on the SE slopes of Killelan mountain, overlooking Doulus Bay and Lough Kay. (1) KE079-008---- The well-preserved circular hut features a splayed, lintelled entrance at SE, .5m wide at base. Almost opposite, on the internal wall-face, is a small wall-niche. D: 3.4m. H: 2.3m. T: .8m. (2) KE079-008001- The foundations of the rectangular hut are located 7m to E. Two collapsed, corbelled sheepfolds occupy its interior. D: 5.5m x 1.6m. A number of old field fences occur in the vicinity; one contains a corbelled recess on its E side. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1316. - KE079-008002 Field boundary
Description
In rough grazing on the lower S-facing slopes of Killelane Mountain with views across Dolus Bay to Valencia Island. A c. 30m long E-W drystone wall (T 0.9m; H 1.2m), built mainly with horizontal slabs, skirts the N side of a hut site (KE079-008----). A similarly built curvilinear wall (T 0.7m; H 1m) extends S from the hut site for c. 25m. The lower courses of this wall appear to be contemporaneous with the hut site, but the upper horizontal courses appear to be the result of rebuilding as a field boundary. (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 407, no. 1316). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011

- KE079-111 Hut site
Description
Midway between KE079-004- and KE079-006----, this circular hut is largely reduced to a mound of stone collapse. Drystone facing is evident beneath the collapse along its N half, giving an internal diameter of 3.8m and an average wall thickness of 1.1m. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1318. - KE079-137 Promontory fort - coastal
Description
Possible promontory fort described in 2003 as follows; ‘A 28m long 22m wide southwest-facing steep sided low headland is cut off from the mainland by a slightly curving low earthen bank and external fosse. Several cattle gaps in the bank are the only traces of an entrance feature. The interior is covered by old lazybeds and a low perimeter bank has all but collapsed into the sea. The shore is accessible from within. The curvature of the bank and its location across the promontory is the only suggestion of earlier defence. The slight dimensions, although not the design, are similar to nearby field boundaries. The surrounding area consists of fertile cleared and drained pasture. A long narrow headland immediately to the north shows similar signs of defence’ (Casey 2003, 29, no. F).
- KE079-138 Promontory fort - coastal
Description
Possible promontory fort described in 2003 as follows; ‘A long sloping south facing headland has the remains of a hut site at the southern tip of the promontory. This consists of a low grassed over collapsed wall foundation describing an area about 6m in diameter. A shallow depression across the neck of the headland is the only indication of an enclosure. The area is one of fertile pasture with traces of earlier cultivation visible in uncleared and undrained pockets of land. The site is overlooked by higher ground to the north. The sloping sea ricks to the south suggest the headland was once larger than the present remains imply' (Casey 2003, 30, no. G).
- KE079-140 Promontory fort - coastal
Description
Possible promontory fort described in 2003 as follows; ‘Several lines of boggy earth seen from the air running across the headland correspond to a deep cleft crossing a narrow isthmus. The site has not yet been inspected at ground level. The area is one of mountainous highlands with a shallow covering of boggy land and outcropping rock' (Casey 2003, 32, no. I).
