  Description

  This enclosure, a stone cashel according to Curran (no.1), was situated on the level, slightly marshy ground bordering Lough Gill at the base of the Magharees Peninsula. It survives only as a circular platform raised from .2 to 1m above the surrounding land and measuring c. 29.5m N-S and 26.5m E-W across its upper surface. Curran described an enclosing wall 16 feet (c. 4.9m) thick but no trace of this is now visible. He also noted traces of 2 hut-sites in the interior, one of which housed the entrance to a souterrain which he was informed consisted of several chambers. The location of the souterrain is shown on the OS maps and is now marked by a spread of stones and sea-shells extending over an area 9m x 6.8m. The above description is derived from J.   Description

  Toberiney/Tobar Éinne (St Aighne\Aignech): Located about 500m to N of Cill Einne (KE036-003003-), at the base of the Magharees peninsula. The well consists of a large pool which is partly defined by stones as is one side of the small stream which flows NW from it. It was visited in the early morning in the months of May and June, especially the 24th of June (Ó Danachair 1960, 74).   Description

  Located on low-lying level ground at the base of the Magharees Peninsula, about 1/2 mile south of Lough Gill. This standing stone, 2m long, .5m to .8m wide and from .25 to .8m thick, was knocked over about 10 years ago (local information). • KE036-003001 Church
  Description

  Killiney church and Graveyard/Cill Éinne (Cill Aighne/the church of Aighne): This site lies in the village of Killiney at the base of the Magharees peninsula. The present large rectangular graveyard may enclose the site of an Early Christian foundation (KE036-003003-). Stone foundations, formerly outside the S wall of the graveyard, were locally reputed to be the remains of an 'ancient monastery' (CKFC 1946), but these were destroyed when the graveyard was recently extended (local information). The parish church is first mentioned in the Papal Taxation List (1302-7) for the diocese of Ardfert (Cal Docs Ire, V, 295). In 1473, the church had long been void (Cal Pap Reg, 13, 336) but its inclusion in a list of parochial churches for the diocese of Ardfert in 1622 (TCD Ms 2158, 94) indicates that it was probably subsequently refurbished. The church was in ruins in 1756 (Smith, 70). The modern Church of Ireland church was erected in the early 19th century (OSNB Killiney, book 2, 10), directly S of the latter. A large stone cross stands beside the S wall of the modern edifice. A bullaun stone, now preserved in the yard of the Roman Catholic chapel in Castlegregory, was formerly incorporated in the wall of the graveyard (KAS). Part of a font basin, most likely contemporary with the ruined church, was discovered built-in to an overground tomb in the graveyard, and a fragment of carved stone, also probably from the medieval church, has been reused as a gravemarker near the SE corner of the building. Tobar Einne (KE036-001----) lies about 500m to N of this site. Medieval Church (KE036-003001-): The present remains testify to at least 2 major building periods. The rectangular church, 15.7m 5.67m internally, probably survives in part from the 13th century, but was largely rebuilt in the 15th or early 16th century when a residential tower was added to the SE corner and a garderobe tower to the S wall. The walls are built of split stone rubble and pinnings bonded in a strong mortar. The E gable and greater parts of the N and S walls stand almost to full height, but the NW and SW quoins with attached N and S returns have fallen. The featureless W gable survives to a maximum height of 2.5m. To the later period belongs the ashlar parapet wall with bevelled oversail which crowned the N and S walls; this has now largely fallen but sections of the elaborate drainage system of the roof are preserved. This consisted of transverse water channels discharging, through regular outlets near the base of the parapet, into stone spouts projecting just below eaves level. The parapet wall was returned along the NE quoin as a weathered offset supported by an angle buttress of ashlar construction. A talus of masonry projecting from the external face of the N wall may also be the remains of a buttress. The upper section of the E gable was largely refurbished in the 15th/16th century; two sections of an engaged filleted column, 0.11m in diameter, incorporated in the rebuilding, were probably from the earlier church. The pitch of the S side of the gable was altered by infilling of the original setback for the rafters and the whole was crowned by ashlar coping. A large water spout near the foot of the gable on the S side doubly functioned to carry water both from the roof of the church and that of the tower which rested on the SE quoin. The E gable was lit by a narrow light with trefoil head set back from the external wall face in a double roll moulded frame with pointed head. The jambs, rebated for a shutter which was secured by a draw bar, are also grooved to accommodate a metal glazing frame, the latter probably a reworking. The window was set in an embrasure with widely splayed ingoings and semicircular rear arch, the soffit of which was subsequently lintelled. The rear arch has now fallen and only a single lintel remains. The E sector of the church is largely obscured by overground burials which partly block the embrasure of the S window. The latter has widely splayed ingoings with dressed sandstone scontions and the semi-circular rear arch retains sections of a plaster coat with traces of a pink coloured wash. The round-headed light has an external chamfer and the sill is grooved for a glazing frame, probably again a secondary feature. The rebated jambs are now much joggled out of position and the opening has been loosely blocked with masonry. The W wall of the tower is butted against the dressings at the E side of the ope, and a large drip stone, projecting just below eaves level, delivers across the head of the window. The garderobe tower built against, but not bonded into, the S wall of the church, served the latrine on the wall walk above; the exterior has been heavily plastered in recent years. The chute may have delivered into a subterranean pit or drain. The secondary doorway near the W end of the S wall is now obscured for half its height by raised burials, one of which is butted against the E ingoing. The doorway was formerly fitted with a S porch, now represented only by weathered coping stones projecting from the external wall face below eaves level. A lintelled passage with splayed W ingoing led to a narrow pointed doorway with chamfered limestone dressings. The jambs were rebated for a door secured from within the passage by a draw bar. There may have been an opposing doorway in the fallen section of the N wall; a fragment of a double-chamfered door jamb lies in the graveyard to the S of the church and there are other moulded fragments in the interior. • KE036-003007 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Killiney church and Graveyard/Cill Ếinne: This site lies in the village of Killiney at the base of the Magharees peninsula. The present large rectangular graveyard may enclose the site of an Early Christian foundation (KE036-003003-). Tower (KE036-003007-): The ivy-covered rectangular tower is now in poor condition. Two storeys of the building are preserved, but the surviving W and S walls of the upper floor have a marked outward bulge and the greater part of the E wall has fallen at this level. The W and N walls of the tower are butted against the church to eaves level of the latter, but above this the re-entrant angles are returned along the SE quoin. The vaulted ground floor chamber is now inaccessible, having been converted to a family burial vault in the 19th century. There may have been an entrance in the E wall destroyed to facilitate the insertion of burials. The chamber was lit by a narrow ogee-headed window in the S wall; sections of the chamfered jambs have fallen and the ope is blocked from within. A rectangular doorway in the N wall of the tower at 1st floor level was undoubtedly accessible from the E end of the church, probably by means of a wooden stair or ladder. The jambs are rebated for a door which could be secured from within the tower by a draw bar. This upper chamber is now largely ruinous. A defaced recess in the W wall may have been a fireplace and the chamber was lit by a narrow chamfered light in the S wall. The head and jambs of the ope have now fallen, the latter into the graveyard below. The window was set in a splayed embrasure, only the W ingoing of which is preserved. There may have been a similar ope in the fallen section of the E wall and the N wall was fitted with a small cupboard. An opening at the E end of the N wall led to a spiral stone stairs in the NE corner of the tower. This stairs gave access, by a three-quarter turn, either to a 3rd storey or more probably to a wall walk on the roof. The small garderobe chamber on the S wall of the church could be reached via the wall walk here. The entrance, opening to the N, has now fallen and only c. 0.4m of the walls are preserved above the level of the flagged floor. This chamber probably had a cap roof. • KE036-005 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Extimated internal diam. 23m A univallate rath situated on a very gentle, N facing slope at the foot of Stradbally mountain. There is an excellent outlook across Tralee and Brandon Bays as far as Brandon Head and Kerry Head. The site is generally in poor condition and dense vegetation obscures much of it. The bank rises a maximum of 1.3m in height externally and .7m internally; it is c. 4m wide at base. The outer flank of the bank in the NNW sector is faced with rough drystone masonry. Numerous large stones lie loose along the bank both internally and externally, suggesting that the facing was formerly more extensive. The bank has been removed from SE through E to N, and dumping of earth and stones against the N part of the bank further obscures the extant remains. The above description is derived from J.   Description

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built c. 1815, with two-bay nave elevations, single-bay single-storey gabled vestry projection to north elevation and single-bay two-stage entrance tower to west gable end. Pitched artificial slate roof with carved springers. Gable copings removed from church but remain to vestry. Castellated parapet to tower. Rubble stone walls. Lancet arch openings with spooled limestone sills, limestone surrounds to north windows, and leaded lattice glazed panels of clear or obscured glass. Limestone tracery to east window and coloured glass to margins. Open timber roof and white painted pews to interior. Remains of detached three-bay single-storey rubble stone-built medieval church, built c. 1600, to south-east, with lancet arch window openings, ruinous in 1894 and now mostly collapsed. Graveyard to site with various cut-stone grave markers c. 1820-present, mausolea and two monuments to separate shipwreck victims.
