  Description

  Internal diam. 41m N-S, 43.5m E-W Lisnarahardin/Lios na Rátha Áirde: This circular bivallate rath contains traces of 3 or 4 hut-sites and also reputedly contained a souterrain (OSNB Cloghane, book 2, 8). It is situated on a slightly elevated tract of level ground overlooking Trabeg. Much of the outer bank is overlain by a modern field fence and is considerably disturbed, particularly to S. It is 3m wide and c. 2.3m high above the bottom of the fosse. The fosse is 2.5m wide at base and the inner bank rises 3.5m above it. The latter is c. 6m wide at base and 1.75m high internally. There are intermittent stretches of drystone revetment on both banks, particularly their inner flanks. The gap through the banks at NNE is a secondary feature. The original entrance faces S and consists of a 4.1m wide gap through the inner bank and a 7m wide causeway across the fosse. The outer bank in this area has been destroyed and a field fence which replaced it has also been removed. The gap through the inner bank is defined on its W side by 3 stones and a single stone stands upright on its E side. The centre of the interior is occupied by a circular, raised area, c. 20.5m in diameter; this is apparently natural. A series of stony banks at the centre of this may mark the sites of 3 huts, but only 1 is clearly defined. It measures 5.7m x 3.5m internally and the 1.1m wide entrance gap faces S, in line with the entrance to the ringfort. A rectangular hut lies in the shelter of the bank at E. It measures 3.5m x 2.8m internally and is enclosed by a 1.15m wide band of collapse. The entrance may have been located in the W wall which is almost completely levelled. • KE043-240 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diam. 43.8m N-S, 46.8m E-W A very large univallate rath situated about 100m NE of KE043-239----, in the inner reaches of the broad valley that surrounds Trabeg. The enclosing bank is composed of earth intermingled with much stone, and it has been considerably disturbed by the field fence which overlies it in the S and E sectors, by the erection of 2 ESB poles inside the W sector, and by the dumping of clearance stones against it, particularly to E. Where best preserved it is .8m high internally, 1.1m high externally and 1.6m wide at base. It is not clear where the original entrance lay. The only features visible in the interior are 2 small, roughly coffin-shaped pits, of unknown function, which lie close to each other in the N sector. These measure 1.64m and 1.4m in length and are up to .56m wide and .6m deep. They are partly lined with drystone masonry and the E end of the W pit is covered by 2 lintels, one of which is a portion of a broken millstone. These latter may be recent additions to prevent animals falling into the pit. The millstone is .82m in diameter and has a central perforation .12m in diameter. An unusual holed stone was found lying on top of the field wall which overlies the enclosing bank. It is irregularly-shaped and measures c. 0.54m x .58m; the perforation is .24m in diameter. • KE043-243 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diam. 27m N-S, 25.5m E-W A circular univallate rath situated in the broad, level, low-lying valley that surrounds Trabeg. The earthen enclosing bank is a maximum of 1.8m high. Field fences radiate out from the site at NE and NW and in the N sector between these the bank is revetted on both faces with rough drystone masonry. The inner stone-facing continues as far as the E sector but then disappears. A slight depression outside the bank along the E sector may indicate the presence of a fosse. There is a .5m wide gap at SSE and a mound directly E of this in the interior may be the debris from its formation. The interior also contains other banks or ridges and hollows of unknown origin.
