  Description

  Internal diam. 20.3m N-S, 21.4m E-W Located in pasture on the lower SW slopes of Geokaun, Valencia Island, this circular univallate rath overlooks the Portmagee Channel to S. The enclosing bank is composed of earth with a substantial quantity of stone, though no facing could be discerned through the sod-cover. It ranges in external height from .5m to 3m, and internally from .45m to 1.4m. It has an average basal width of 3.15m and features a 1.8m wide entrance gap at SE. A regular upright slab, marked 'Gallaun' (KE078-010004-) on the OS maps, stands close to the SW side of the entrance. It is 1.54m high and measures .95m x .3m at base; NW-SE. A second slab, c. 1.6m long, lies prostrate 1.5m to E and is almost completely covered by sod. These slabs probably served as portals on the inner side of the entrance. A field boundary overlies a portion of the bank at N. The remains of a roughly circular hut (KE078-010003-) are located in the S sector of the site's interior. Measuring 3.6m in internal diameter, its 1.1m wide walls survive only .2m high. About 2m to NW a low grassy bank forms a semicircular outline and may indicate the foundations of a second hut (KE078-010005-).   Description

• KE078-011 Souterrain
  Description

  This souterrain, not marked on the OS maps, is located on a terrace on a gentle S facing slope on Valencia Island. Its entrance is enclosed by a semicircular bank, 4m in overall dimensions, on the inner side of which is a short stretch of well-built stone facing, now mostly concealed in dense vegetation. This may be the remnants of an associated hut or it may be related to the low cairn which overlay the souterrain up to the late 1930s (Kerry Champion, 28/8/1937). O'Connell recorded that iron-slag was found among the stones of the cairn, and also described a large heavily scored stone which was found over the entrance to the souterrain (OPW). Through a rectangular entrance, .8m x .6m, three stone steps descend to a lintelled opening through which access is gained to a N-S rectangular chamber. The first step occurs .45m below present ground level and the risers of the remaining two are each .4m high. A large amount of collapse and modern domestic debris has accumulated at the base of the steps. Through the lintelled opening the chamber extends N-S for a distance of 3.1m. Its average width is 1m and it is 1.2m high. It is roofed with slabs and the side-walls are built of regular courses of flat slabs. A thick layer of a sooty substance coats the walls of the chamber. The floor is usually flooded and it appears to descend towards its S end. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.   Description

  This large standing stone, abutting the S side of a earthen field bank, is situated on a level terrace on SE sloping land on Valentia Island and overlooks Portmagee Channel to S. It is of trapezoidal plan at base and has maximum dimensions of 1.2m x .28m; NE-SW. Of regular elevation, the sides taper smoothly in width to an uneven top. The stone stands 2.6m high and inclines slightly to SE. Several packing stones are visible at its SE side. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. • KE078-023 Hut site
  Description

  Located in pasture on the lower SW slopes of Geokaun, Valencia Island, midway between a rath (KE078-010001-) and a souterrain (KE078-011----). The ruined remains of a subcircular hut, described by O'Connell in 1937 as an 'earth and stone ring with grave sites' (OPW). A lintelled drystone wall chamber in the inner wall-face at N measures .25m high, .4m wide and at least 1m deep. D: 6.3m x 4.4m. Small amorphous mounds and depressions directly S of hut.
