Description
Local tradition holds that a church once stood on the W side of the stream that discharges into Portmagee Channel at Mill Point, Valencia Island. No apparent trace of an antiquity exists at this location. During clearance work here in the early 1960s the stone foundations of buildings were uncovered beneath the sod, and the 'arm of a cross’ which bore 'Celtic writing' was discovered (local information). The above description is derived from O'Sullivan, A. and Sheehan, J. (compilers) 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University press. (1996), no. 975. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 18 June 2013
