- KE078-025 House - early medieval
Description
On a low rise with a thin covering of peat, immediately SW of Coosatorinth, Valencia Island. The ruins of at least three huts occur within an old field system which occupies an area with a radius of about 100m. Mitchell postulates an Early Medieval date for the cluster (1989, 69). (1) KE078-025----; At the N end of the complex, a two-roomed rectangular hut built up against the W side of a large rock outcrop. D: 5m x 4m. About 20m S is a roughly oval-shaped cluster of slabs, 9m x 5.5m; nearby is a 15m stretch of wall that runs beneath the bog at its S end. (2) KE078-025001-; At the SE end of the complex, the ruined remains of a circular hut foundation defined by upright slabs. D: 3.1m. Located immediately NE is a low sod-covered mound with erect slabs at its centre. (3) KE078-025002-; At W, a two-roomed rectangular hut with a basal row of uprights. D: 5.7m x 3.7m. - KE087-003 Fulacht fia
Description
This well-preserved fulacht fiadh was exposed by peat-cutting on the gentle, S facing slope of a rise in Emlagh Bog, Valencia Island. It is located just W of a modern trackway and consists of a mound, a stone-built hearth and a slab-lined trough. It rests on 2m of peat. The sod-covered mound is approximately oval-shaped in plan. It measures 5.6m NE-SW x 5m NW-SE and rises 1.25m above surrounding ground level. It is largely composed of fire-shattered stone, with ling charcoal and flecks of vivianite occurring throughout. The hearth is located at its W end; its S and E sides, .5m high, are formed of roughly coursed, fire-reddened stones. It opens onto the trough at NW, which is of rectangular plan and is constructed of upright slabs set on edge. It measures .7m N-S x 1.85m E-W. The W end-stone is missing. An orthostat, 1.1m high, stands .8m NE of the trough and has been partially incorporated into the mound. A sample of charcoal from the body of the mound yielded a radiocarbon determination of 3250±100 BP (Mitchell 1989, 67). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 419. - KE087-015 Enclosure
Description
This small circular enclosure, not marked on the OS maps, lies in poor, S sloping pasture on Valencia Island, overlooking Portmagee Channel. The enclosing earthen bank is eroded and quite heavily overgrown, surviving best along the S sector. It is .65m high externally, .4m high internally and 1.5m wide. There are many cattle tracks through the bank, and a large break occurs at N. It is not clear, however, where the original entrance is located. The site measures 9m in internal diameter. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 722. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 29 July 2013
- KE087-016 Enclosure
Description
Located c. 80m S of KE087-015---- and not marked on the OS maps, this site survives as an earthen bank which encloses a subcircular area, 10m N-S x 11m E-W. The bank has an external height of .65m and rises .55m internally. Its basal width varies from 1m to 2.1m. The bank is highest and widest along the S side of the site. It is gapped in several places but none of these appear to represent an entrance. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 723. - KE087-018 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diam. 36m NE-SW, 31.2m NW-SE Oonagranshee Cave / Uaigh na Grainsighe: This poorly preserved D-shaped site is situated in sloping pasture on the S side of Valencia Island. It survives as a roughly level platform, the surface of which has recently been disturbed, and contains in its interior two huts, a souterrain and a number of ambiguous features. Remnants of a low earthen enclosing bank, c.5m wide, survive from N to E and measure up to 1.5m high above external ground level. Four slabs, disposed end-to-end, revet part of its inner face at E. Elsewhere the platform does not rise appreciably above external ground level. A rectangular house (KE087-018002-) in the interior measures 8.5m NW-SE x 5.8m x NE-SW internally, and its overgrown stone walls average .8m wide and .4m high. A well-defined doorway, .8m wide, is located in the SE end-wall; two threshold slabs remain in situ.A short stretch of stone-faced bank and a small stone-lined oval depression are located immediately adjacent to the external NE angle of the house; their functions are unclear. In the 1980s a trench was dug parallel to the NE side-wall of the house. The foundations of a hut (KE087-018003-) of circular plan are located on the S side of the rectangular house and measure 4.8m in internal diameter. Its corbelled wall stands to a maximum height of .9m at NW, but its outer face is obscured by a build-up of earth. Two opposing gaps occur at ENE and WSW, and S of these the foundations of the hut are poorly defined. A 4.5m long, curving souterrain passage (KE087-018001-) extends out from the interior of the hut. Its lintels have been robbed. The drystone-built passage is filled with debris and its side-walls survive to a height of .9m. An opening, located outside the hut at E, may indicate an extension of the souterrain in this direction. A subrectangular shallow depression, 3m x 1.3m, is located in the NE sector of the site. Its NW side and a short stretch of the opposite side are stone-lined. A 6.6m long stretch of a stone-faced earthen bank extends radially from the inner face of the enclosing bank at E. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 490. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013

- KE087-039 Fulacht fia
Description
This fulacht fiadh is located on a slightly elevated, peat-covered promontory on the S shore of Valencia Island. Before excavation it consisted of a well-preserved slab-lined trough at the W end of a broad, low, sod-covered mound. The site was excavated in 1988 (Sheehan 1990b, 27-37). The trough was constructed in a pit and its sides were formed of regular sandstone slabs. Measuring .9m NE-SW x 1.4m NW-SE x .6m deep, a large rectangular slab served as its floor. A number of slabs and deposits of clay formed a possible working surface at its S side. The mound was roughly oval in plan, 10m NE-SW x 7m NW-SE, and rose 1.35m high above surrounding ground level. It consisted of quantities of burnt and fire-shattered sandstone, intermixed with peat ash and nodules of peat charcoal. A loose tumble of large stones and slabs occurred along its NW limits. Underlying the level of the mound, and all other archaeological deposits noted on the site, was fibrous brown peat, a sample of which yielded a radiocarbon determination of 2950±80 BP. A group of pottery sherds and a spindle-whorl comprised the finds from the site. The spindle-whorl is of Early Medieval type and derived from a sealed deposit associated with the trough. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 420. - KE087-040 Hut site
Description
Occupying a slight hollow on the S side of a peat-covered rock-rise near Reenarea Point, midway along the S side of Valencia Island. An excavated fulacht fiadh (KE087-039----) lies c. 13m to SW. The hut site was excavated in 1993 and the following description is largely based on the interim report of that excavation (Hayden 1994b, 42-3). Prior to excavation the site was visible as a subcircular outline marked by slabs protruding above ground surface, and by a slight eastern extension. The site underlay an accumulation of fibrous peat from .4m to .6m thick, and its S foundations rested on peat up to .6m in depth. It comprised a polygonal drystone hut, 2.8m x 2.5m internally, with a subrectangular annex at E. Its roughly built wall stood .91m in maximum height and varied in thickness from .3m at N to .7m at S, where it had collapsed outwardly. A row of upright slabs formed the base of the inner wall-face. The .55m wide entrance at W, with an in situ threshold slab, was flanked by a pair of low uprights. A portion of its broken lintel remained in situ. The floor of the hut was lined with a layer of angular cobbles and contained lintelled drains which led out under the wall at S. The roof of the hut was supported on the wall and on a centrally set post, the stone-lined post-hole for which survived. The roof of the annex may have been corbelled. The remains of burnt timbers, charcoal, waste flakes of flint and sherds of pottery were found on the floor of the hut. Timber from the hut floor and charcoal from its construction levels yielded radiocarbon dates of 766±20 BC and 796±20 BC respectively. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1201. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 31 July 2013
- KE087-041 Burnt spread
Description
Traces of a fulacht fiadh were exposed in the side of a drain at this location in the mid-1980s. The site is located on the landward end of a low peat-covered rise which juts into Portmagee Channel at the S side of Valencia Island. Resting on .4m of peat, the site is exposed as a .15m thick lens of charcoal and burnt stone. The charcoal was identified as that of oak, hawthorn and poplar/willow, and it yielded a radiocarbon determination of 3800±100 BP (Mitchell 1989, 82). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 421. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
- KE087-042 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diam. 32m N-S, 34.3m E-W Not marked on the OS maps, this circular univallate rath is located close to the S shore of Valencia Island, near Reenarea Point, from where it commands fine prospects along the length of Portmagee Channel. The enclosing bank, composed of earth and some small stone, is quite eroded. The external fosse is flat-bottomed and is best preserved at SE and S. Here, it averages 2.9m wide and .25m deep below external ground level. The bank survives best along the E sector, where it is .7m high, both externally and internally, and has a basal width of 3.7m. Two gaps occur in the bank at ESE and WSW. That at ESE, 7m wide, may represent the original entrance; the fosse cannot be traced at this point. A series of cultivation ridges occupies the interior of the rath. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 491. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
- KE087-077 Hut site
Description
Within an extensive old field system, on the N side of an escarpment and E of a modern trackway which runs through Emlagh Bog, Valencia Island. An oval-shaped hut with a poorly defined annex at E, built into the N face of the scarp. D: 3.4m x 2.8m. The annex measures 3.8m x 2.7m in internal dimensions. A number of small subrectangular fields surround the hut and incorporate at least two animal shelters. Mitchell considers this complex to be of Early Medieval date (1989, 66-7). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1202.
