• KE022-002001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on relatively level terrain at the base of an N-facing slope. Depicted as a circular banked enclosure (diam. c. 33m) on the 1st (1841) edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is similarly depicted on later OS map editions. When visited in 1985 the outline of the enclosing bank (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.35m) was most obvious SSW-NNE and it was traceable E-SSW. A slight depression of a wide fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.3m) could be discerned E-SW. The interior was level and clear of vegetation cover. Compiled by: Matt Kelleher Date of upload: 28 January 2014

  Description

  In pasture, on relatively level terrain at the base of a W-facing slope. A ringfort (KE022-002001-) is immediately adjacent c. 20m to the NNE. A concentration of burnt cinders and stones was discovered here in the course of field fence clearance by the landowner in the early 1970s.   Description

  In pasture, on a N-facing slope. A roughly circular area (43m N-S; 46m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 1.45m; ext. H 1.6m) and fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.5m). The bank, which is largely obscured by vegetation cover, is best preserved at SSW where it reaches an external height of 2m. The fosse, best preserved SE-SW where it is heavily masked by briars, can be traced elsewhere as a slope into the external face of bank. Entrance (Wth 4.45m) at N.   Description

  In tillage, on a steep NW-facing slope. Depicted on the 2nd ed. (1897-8) OS 6-inch map as a circular area (diam. c. 35m) enclosed by a bank. The enclosure was partially levelled in the early 1960s with the remaining portion levelled in the early 1980s. A low rise, tracing the line of the bank, can be traced along the SW arc. According to the landowner steps originally led down to two subterranean chambers in the NW quadrant of the interior suggesting the presence of a souterrain (KE022-004001-) here.   In pasture, on a NW-facing slope. Depicted on the 2nd ed. (1897-8) OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular area (31.5m N-S; 28.8m E-W) enclosed by a bank. Although largely levelled in the late 1970s, a portion of the earthen enclosing bank (int. H 1.65; ext. H 1.6m) along the SE arc has been preserved in a field boundary. • KE022-006 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on relatively level terrain. A roughly circular area (35m N-S; 31.5m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank and an external fosse. The bank (int. H 3.2m; ext. H 1.1m) and the outer verges of the level interior are heavily masked by briars and bushes. The fosse is difficult to trace but survives W-NW and along the SE arc where it is best preserved (Wth 4m; D 1.4m). There is a possible entrance (Wth 4m) at N. A limekiln, built into the bank at E, is depicted on the 2nd ed. (1897-8) OS 6-inch map although it was not visible on the day of survey (11 September 1985) due to dense vegetation cover.   In pasture, on a N-facing slope. Depicted on the 1st ed. (1841) OS 6-inch map as a circular area (diam. c. 36m) enclosed by a bank. According to the landowner, the ringfort was largely levelled in the mid 1960s but a portion of the enclosing bank (int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.35m) was preserved in a field boundary S-WNW.   In pasture, on a N-facing slope. On the 1st ed. (1841) OS 6-inch map a ‘cave’ is depicted immediately outside the enclosing bank of a ringfort (KE022-007----) at E. It is not depicted on later OS map editions. No visible surface trace of this possible souterrain was evident during a site inspection in 1985.   Description

  In pasture, on relatively level terrain. According to the landowner, this now levelled fulacht fia originally consisted of a mound (H 0.3m; dims. 6m x 4m). A spread of black earth and heat shattered stones (9.2m N-S; 8.6m E-W) was visible when surveyed in 1985. Another fulacht fia (KE022-009----) is in the same field c. 85m to NE.   In pasture, on relatively level terrain. According to the landowner, this fulacht fia originally consisted of a mound (H 0.3m) but it was partially levelled in 1984. A low roughly circular mound (H 0.15m; 5.7m N-S; 6.8m E-W) consisting of black earth and heat shattered stones was visible when surveyed in 1985.
