Recorded monuments

• KD013-005001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On a broad terrace on a long, gentle, W-facing slope in tillage. The 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map shows a large, sub-circular area (est. diam. c. 100m), defined by a curving field boundary, named 'Glebe', and containing a church site (KD013-005002-) and graveyard (KD013-005003-) in the NE sector. The latest ed. (1911) of the OS 6-inch map shows that the enclosing boundary had been removed between NNE and S. According to the landowner, the surviving enclosing element, which he remembered as 'a hedge', was removed c. 1985 during land improvement works. No visible surface trace survives. • KD013-005002 Church
  Description

  According to Reid (1999, 8) the church 'was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and entered in Dr Mac Geoghans's list as 'Ecclesia Sanctae Mariae do Ballynaffaghy'. It is shown on Noble and Keenan's 1752 Map of County Kildare, and is marked 'Church Ruins' on Taylor's 1783 Map of County Kildare. The OSL (Herity 2002, 34) record that, 'Near the South East corner of the Parochial Church (KD013-005004-), stands a small portion of a wall belonging to the old Church'. The ruins lie near the centre of a graveyard (KD013-005003-). Only a short length of the N wall of the building survives (L 6m; H 2m; T 0.9m), built of rubble limestone masonry, with a mix of large unworked boulders and smaller field stones facing a mortared rubble core. It contains a partially robbed-out window embrasure just E of centre, and retains a dump of stones against its S face. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

• KD013-005003 Graveyard
  Description

  In the NE sector of a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD013-005001-). A sub-rectangular area (dims. L c. 70m N-S; Wth c. 60m) is enclosed by a mortared stone wall with an entrance gate at the SW corner. The majority of the grave markers occur to the E of a 19th century church (KD013-005004-) and date from the 18th-20th c. O'Leary and Cullen (1999, 18-20) have transcribed the inscriptions. • KD013-005004 Church
  Description

  According to Reid (1999, 6-17) the church was built in 1831 when 'One church capable of accommodating 200 persons (was) built by means of a gift of £900 British granted by the late Board of First Fruits' and was described in the Deed of Consecration as measuring 'fifty-four feet (c.16.5m) from east to west and twenty-five feet (c.7.5m) north to south' (internally). The severe storms of the early 1980's caused major damage to the church and in 1985 the building was made safe by the removal of the roof and the blocking-up of doors and windows. The church stands in a roadside graveyard (KD013-005003-) which also contains the ruins of a medieval parish church (KD013-005002-) all contained in a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD013-005001-). • KD013-006 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Described in 1955 as a circular ringfort (ext. diam. c. 50m) defined by traces of an earthen bank and an outer fosse (SMR file). The monument lay near the bottom of a long, gentle S-facing slope in improved tillage. Local field boundaries, recorded on the latest ed. (1911) of the OS 6-inch map, have been removed creating one very large field, and, while no visible surface trace of the monument survives, sub-surface features may survive intact.   One of five sites (KD013-028---- to KD013-032----) recorded in Prosperous bog, part of the Bord na Móna Coolnamona group of works, and all classified by ADS Ltd. as 'sightings of archaeological wood'. Two sites (KD013-029---- and KD013-032----) were dated AD1010 to 1260 and AD1300 to 1450. KD013-028---- comprised three portions of brushwood in section in a drain face. (ADS Ltd.
