- KD013-011 Ringfort - rath
Description
Near the S foot of a very gentle S-facing slope in improved pasture. Described in 1972 as a circular ringfort defined by a bank, but too densely overgrown with bushes and briars to allow a full record to be made, and subsequently found, upon a revisit in 1986, to have been levelled as a consequence of land improvement (SMR file). No visible surface traces survive. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD013-012 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a narrow SE-facing shoulder, just off the crest of a low hill, in mixed tillage and pasture. A small, fairly well-preserved, circular area (int. diam 16m) is defined by a low, broad, flat topped, inner earthen bank (Wth 6.7-8.3m: int. H 0.3-0.6m; ext. H 1.2-1.7m), and a shallow outer fosse (Wth 2-2.7m; D 0.3m) NW-E-SW. A low earthen causeway (L 2.3m; H 0.2m) crossing the fosse at SE and a corresponding gap in the bank (Wth 2.2m) mark the original entrance, while an opposing gap (Wth 1.9m) in the bank at NW may be a later feature. The level interior is lightly poached by livestock. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD013-013 Ringfort - rath
Description
In 'Rath Avenue', a modern housing development of semi-detached bungalows on the S side of Prosperous village. Described in 1972 as a circular rath (int. diam. 36m) defined by a low, inner earthen bank, a waterlogged fosse and traces of a second, outer bank on the W side, with a possible entrance at SW and standing on flat, poorly drained pasture (SMR file). The monument is now a landscaped, subcircular area (int. diams. 45m N-S; 41m E-W) defined by a broad, flat topped, earthen bank (Wth 2.9m at S - 4m at W; Int H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 1.1-1.5m) retaining a raised, waterlogged interior, with a wide, straight-sided, machine-cut looking entrance gap (Wth 3.8m) at SE. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD013-014 Font (present location)
Description
Stands outside the entrance to Prosperous church, but according to Comerford (1866, 79) it originally came from the medieval parish church (KD013-019----) in Killybegs Demesne townland, c. 1 mile to the SE. An octagonal limestone font (dims. L 0.64m; Wth 0.64m; each face measuring 0.46m in Wth; H 0.26m) sits on an octagonal limestone column (total H c. 1.5m). One face bears the deeply carved but partially worn figure of an angel with a halo holding a shield across its stomach; a motif which is paralleled on some Co. Meath fonts such as those at Dunsany (MH037-019----) and Rathmore (MH024-017----), which have been dated by Roe to the mid and late-15th c. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD013-033 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
In 1999, archaeological monitoring (Licence No. 99E0569) of topsoil-stripping associated with the Prosperous Sewerage Scheme revealed a small but distinct area of burning, irregular in plan with rounded corners (dims. L 1.74m NW-SE; Wth 1.14m; D 0.13m); the probable truncated remains of a fire-pit. A sample of the fill was sent for wood analysis, after which it was to be submitted for radiocarbon dating.
