  Description

  A limestone block (dims L 1.04m; Wth 0.9m; 0.48m) with a shallow rectangular mortice, now lying beside a small heap of limestone rubble on which it appears to have stood originally; possibly the 'very small mound' noted in the OSL (Herity 2002 157 (2)). It is possibly 'Richard Fitzgerald's cross' mentioned in 1591 as marking the mearing of lands at Rathbride (JKAS 1899-1902, 396-7). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

• KD022-040 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  On a short, gentle, S-facing slope, overgrown with whins. Described by O'Riordáin (1950, 277: Site E1; scaled section at W Plate XXVII) as an irregular area, 'enclosed by a bank, outside which a slight ditch and low bank are discernible. Interior is sub-divided by banks, the plan of which is not clear as much of the area is overgrown'. A rectangular area (int. dims. L 51.5m E-W; Wth 41m) is defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 4.5m; int H 0.5m; ext H 0.7m) with very faint traces of an outer fosse (Wth 0.9m; D 0.1m) at E. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.4m) at S. The interior falls 1.5m N-S and a possible ringbarrow lies in the SW sector, where a small circular area (diam. 5.3m) is defined by a broad, shallow fosse (Wth 3.1m at N; D 0.3m) and a low outer earthen bank (Wth 4m; H 0.3-0.8m), N-S. The W-half of the monument has been disturbed and three short lengths of later field banks run from the larger enclosure's bank to converge on the barrow at SE, SW and NW. The larger enclosure may be a later feature and a second ringbarrow (KD022-065001-) lies 10m to the S. The monument is visible on a 1970 aerial photograph (CUCAP BDU 21) which also shows up to 13 small circular enclosures (est. av. diam. 6-10m) in its immediate vicinity; some may be ringbarrows/ringditches, but some are almost certainly lunging rings.   A slightly domed, circular area (diam. 26m) is enclosed by a shallow fosse with an external bank. An external fosse immediately outside the bank is visible at the S. A second low, concentric bank lies 32m outside the bank (overall diam. of enclosed area 81m). Visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP BDU 21). Two areas of disturbance, several golf greens, and a rectangular house site with attached haggard, defined by low banks and shallow fosses, occur in the area between the inner and outer banks.   A level, circular area (diam. c. 28m) is enclosed by a fosse with an external bank (overall diam. 40m). There is an entrance at the W, with a second gap at the NE. Partially excavated by O'Riordáin (1950, 250-253: Site 1). Four post holes and a short shallow trench of uncertain function were discovered, but no evidence of burials was uncovered.   Description

  A raised circular area (diam. c. 20m) containing a small central mound (diam. 3.2m), defined by an inner bank, a fosse, and traces of slight outer bank (overall diam. 32m). Partial excavation by O'Riordáin (1950, 259-269: Site 6) revealed a two-period monument. Phase 1: comprised a low central mound of earth and stone covering the extended inhumation of an adult (head to NW), enclosed by two concentric fosses (c. 6m and c. 8m from the centre) and two smaller fosses close to the central mound - a possible multiple ring-barrow. O'Riordáin suggested that the larger fosses had external banks and that the smaller fosses provided material for the central mound. Phase 2: a cemetery of twelve extended inhumations (head to W), including two children, three adults, two adult females and four adult males was enclosed by the large fosse and bank visible today, and the central mound was also enlarged during this phase. Finds (none directly associated with burials) included six pieces of flint (two worked), one polychrome glass bead (white, yellow and blue), several sherds of medieval pottery and three other sherds with horizontal-line decoration. • KD022-051 Linear earthwork
  Description

  Two sections of earthwork are defined by two, low, parallel, earthen banks with an intervening fosse: one runs NNE-SSW between the Little Curragh and the Curragh Racecourse (est. traceable L. c. 2000m), the other runs perpendicularly E from the first, crossing the Curragh between the Curragh Racecourse and St. Legers Bottoms (est. traceable length L. 3000m). O'Riordáin (1950, 270-71), having excavated a small section near the junction of the two earthworks and found a fairly broad, deep fosse (Wth c. 2.1m; D c. 1.2m) flanked by insubstantial earthen banks, concluded that it was neither road nor boundary, and suggested that it might have been used for droving livestock across the Curragh. In 1998, limited archaeological excavation (O’Keeffe 1999, 4: Excavation licence no. 98E0059) across the presumed N-S line of the monument at the E edge of the Curragh (located at ITM 674952 712976) in advance of a gas pipeline found no evidence of a pre-modern earthwork.   Description

  A small, low mound (diam. c. 7m; H. 0.5m), fully excavated by O'Riordáin (1950, 254: Site No. 3). Although composed mainly of a brown soil, the excavator remarked on the quantity of charcoal incorporated in the mound material at different levels.   Description

  On level ground at the S end of a low spur which projects N and which is defined along its NW and NE sides by two narrow, shallow wet 'gullies', near the centre of a large, disused horse-exercising track. Visible on an aerial photograph (DoD, 1999). A small, slightly raised circular area (diams. 3.7m NNW-SSE; 3.1m NNE-SSW) is defined by a very shallow fosse (Wth 1.6m at WSW-3.4m at ENE; D 0.1-0.2m). Immediately outside, between W and N, lie five shallow, circular depressions (diams. 2.5-3.8m; D 0.1-0.2m) whose function and relationship to the main site is uncertain. (A similar pattern, though represented by different vegetation growth, occurs at a possible ditch barrow (KD022-085----) c. 685m to the SE.) A second, similar site (KD022-073----) lies 13m to the NNW. This is one of a group of six similar, closely associated monuments (KD022-072---- to KD022-077----) on this part of the Little Curragh.   Description

  On a very gentle S-facing slope at the N edge of the Little Curragh. Visible on aerial photograph (DoD, 1999). A poorly preserved rectangular area (int. dims. L 25.5m N-S; Wth 16.5m) is defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 3.5m; int H 0.1m; ext. H 0.2m) W-N-E, and by a narrow, shallow outer fosse (Wth 0.7m; D 0.1m). Broad, well defined cultivation ridges abut the enclosing element at E and cover the interior. A larger , rectangular field (dims. L 70m E-W; Wth 35m) abuts the enclosure at W and is defined by low earthen bank E-S-W and by a substantial townland boundary bank along the N. That field contains narrower, less well defined cultivation ridges.   On top of the low, broad ridge which forms the spine of the Little Curragh and which also carries three other possible ditch-barrows; (KD022-083----) c. 45m to the SE, (KD022-081---- and KD022-082----) c. 140m to the ESE, a large ring-barrow (KD022-042----) c. 110m to the SE and a second large ring-barrow (KD022-043----) c. 200m to the ESE. A fourth ditch-barrow (KD022-080----) lies c. 190m to NE. Visible on an aerial photograph (DoD, 1999). A slightly raised circular area (diam. 7.4m) is defined by a very shallow fosse (Wth 1.4-1.7m; D 0.2m). A footpath track bisects the interior N-S. In the SE quadrant different vegetation growth forms a well defined a circular area (diam 1.8m) and six other examples of this occur immediately outside the monument E-S-W. Their origin, function and relationship with the barrow is unclear.   Midway down a short but moderately steep S-facing slope, immediately W of a small, tarred track. Visible on an aerial photograph (DoD, 1999). A small, very slightly raised circular area (diam. 2m; H 0.2m) is defined by a narrow, shallow fosse (Wth 0.9-1.4m; D 0.15m), and a slight, outer, earthen bank (Wth 1.9-3.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.15m) ENE-S-NNW. A gap (Wth 0.8m) in the bank at S may be an original entrance, but there is no evidence of a corresponding causeway across the fosse. The perimeter is damaged by vehicles at NE. • KD023-106 Enclosure
  Description

  Visible on an aerial photograph (DoD 1999). On a very long, gentle E-facing slope. A small, sub circular area (diams. 11m N-S; 9m E-W) is defined by a broad earthen bank (Wth 6-7m; int H 0.7-1.1m; ext. H 0.8-1.2m) and narrow outer fosse (Wth 1.2-2.2m; D 0.5-0.8m). A gap (Wth 3m) in the bank at WNW and a corresponding causeway across the fosse give access to the interior. A second, narrower causeway at NW appears to be a later feature, the result of spoil from a pit dug outside the site being dumped in the fosse. A concrete pill-box is built into the enclosing bank at SW. The site is not recorded on any ed. of the OS 6-inch maps, and appears to be some sort of military earthwork. • KD023-109 Burnt pit
  Description

  Construction of the Kildare Bypass unearthed several charcoal scatters on the Curragh, Co. Kildare. Further archaeological investigation (Licence No. 01E0956: www.excavations.ie) revealed eight circular pits, varying in diameter from 1.4m to 0.4m and in depth from 1m to 0.2m. The features were spread out over an 80m stretch of new road construction, with no obvious pattern. The pit fills were similar, consisting of burnt stone fragments, charcoal and silty clay.
