  Description

  According Tickell (1960, 379) Hugh de Lacy and his son had a castle at Sherlockstown, while Fitzgerald (1903, 68) records, 'Sir Walter Dongan (inherited) in 1592 (and) was … created a Baronet … in 1623. His Kildare possessions consisted of the Manor of Sherlockstown, containing one castle … .' This castle was probably a tower house which may subsequently have been incorporated into Sherlockstown House, described by Bence-Jones (1978, 259) as, 'a long, irregular, slightly castellated house (with a) tower-like centre.'   Description

  One of two wayside crosses shown on Noble and Keenan's 1752 map of Kildare, c. 900m to the N, on the road from Sherlockstown to Straffan. By the late 19th century, according to Sherlock (1891-95, 40), 'only the bases' remained, one of which (KD014-042001-) 'is built into the boundary wall of Little Rath', where it is also shown on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map. (The original location of KD014-042001-is designated KD014-028----.) Both bases were subsequently moved to Sherlockstown graveyard (KD014-043003-). A square limestone base (dims. L 0.74m; Wth 0.74m; H 0.7m) has a chamfered upper surface with a small rectangular mortice.   Description

  One of two wayside crosses (see KD014-042---- also) shown on Noble and Keenan's 1752 map of county Kildare, c. 1 mile to the N, on the road from Sherlockstown to Straffan. By the late 19th century, according to Sherlock (1891-95, 40), 'only the bases' remained, 'the larger of the two' having been moved to 'the farmyard at Prospect, nearly opposite the spot on which it formerly stood'. Both bases were subsequently moved to Sherlockstown graveyard (KD014-043003-). A square limestone base (dims. L 1m; Wth 1m; H 0.6m) has a chamferred upper surface and bears a badly worn inscription, of which only the words 'me fecet' are legible.   Description

  In a graveyard (KD014-043003-). According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 46 (141)), 'The old Parochial Church of Sherlockstown, has been entirely from the foundation cleared away'. Sherlock (1899-1902, 298) commented on the church's similarity to the churches at Bodenstown (KD014-041----) and Kerdiffstown (KD019-006----). In 1985 there was no visible surface trace of the church which, according to the owner, belonged to the Order of St John of Jerusalem (SMR file).   Description

  In a graveyard (KD014-043003-), on the site of a medieval parish church (KD014-043001-). A plain, rectangular baptismal font (dims. L 0.71m; Wth 0.66m; H 0.34m), contains a shallow, rectangular depression (dims. L 0.43m; Wth 0.38m; D 0.2m), and two small mortices which, Sherlock (1899-1902, 298-9) explains, would have contained 'iron rivets leaded into the stone for the cover and lock required by the Constitution of Edward, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1236' .   Description

  In a small wood c. 100m N of a possible tower house (KD014-027001-) and mansion (KD014-027002-). According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 46 (141)), 'Within the precincts of the Churchyard, in which the old church (KD014-043001-) stood, and which lies now without a fence in an open field, is the vault of the Sherlock family'.   Description

  In a graveyard (KD014-043003-). In 1985, two carved, round-arched window surrounds, and a possible quern stone and grinder were noted. While the window fragments are likely to have come from the levelled church (KD014-043001-), it was remarked that a former owner, Canon Sherlock, was a noted antiquarian and collector who might have moved the pieces from elsewhere to this spot (SMR file).   Description

  Named 'Raheen Doon' on Brownrigg's 1791 map in his 'Survey of Sherlockstown, Bodenstown and Little Rath' (NLI Ms. 16 H. 15(21) Map No. 17), and on a later, 1799 map of his (op. cit. Map No. 19) he records a bivallate enclosure in 'Raheen Doon Field'. The site is shown as a raised, circular area (est. diam. c. 40m) on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map , but it is not recorded on the latest ed. (1938-9), which shows the Dublin-Sallins railway line running through the site.   Description

  In 1983, human remains were discovered at a depth of c. 0.3m during the bulldozing of a raised area, possibly a mound with a substratum of esker-like sand and gravel, in advance of the construction of two houses. Subsequent investigation by the NMI identified the cremated remains of a neonate, the unburnt remains of a juvenile aged 5-7 years, a teenager aged 13-16 years and a late-middle aged/older adult male.
