Horizonal Directional Drilling points to traverse the Dunrally stream and the local roads L3930, L3901 and L3817. A separate planning application will be made to An Bord Pleanála as part of a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID). This will include the provision of a 110kV substation with electrical control building and ancillary electrical infrastructure, associated compound with palisade fence which is to be located in the West Parcel (A) in the townland of Morett. The substation will connect to the national grid via. A LILO grid connection onsite. This planning application will be lodged with An Bord Pleanála in due course.   Description

  New monument discovered in 2003 during excavations of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme by Jonathan Dempsey of Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd under licence number 03E0623. This site was located in an area of deep fill and was protected and reburied and preserved in situ. Described as Cappakeel A this site consisted of two parallel ditches, 3m apart, and orientated NNW-SSE.   Description

  New monument discovered in 2003 during excavations of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme by Jonathan Dempsey of Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd under licence number 03E1048. This site was located in an area of deep fill and was protected and reburied and preserved in situ. Described as Cappakeel 2 this site consisted of a charcoal-manufacturing kiln that was subrectangular with rounded corners, measuring 0.96m E-W by 0.8m by 0.1m deep, with a flat base. The excavation at site F at Cappakeel townland revealed a prehistoric ring-ditch, a linear ditch (LA009-051) of medieval date and a series of charcoal production pits (LA009-052). The ring-ditch was relatively small, with an internal diameter of 3.5m. It showed no evidence of any entrance but was disturbed on the NW side by a linear medieval ditch (Bennett 2006, 289).   Description

  New monument uncovered during excavation by Ros O Maolduin under licence number 03E0633 in advance of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme. The excavation at site F at Cappakeel townland revealed a prehistoric ring-ditch (LA009-050), a linear ditch of medieval date and a series of charcoal production pits (LA009-052). The ring-ditch was relatively small, with an internal diameter of 3.5m. It showed no evidence of any entrance but was disturbed on the NW side by a linear medieval ditch. The burnt deposits that filled the ditch indicate at least two phases of deposition. The linear medieval ditch was orientated on a NE-SW axis, It produced a crutch-headed stirrup-looped ring pin and a rotary grinding stone. The ring pin may date from approx. 1000-1050 AD. Coupled with the finds the linear ditch suggests the existence of a contemporaneous settlement in the vicinity. The ditch may be part of a medieval field system beside an enclosure similar to those recently discovered at Killickaweeny, Co. Kildare, and Balriggan, Co. Louth (Bennett 2006, 289).   Description

  New monument uncovered during excavation by Ros O Maolduin under licence number 03E0633 in advance of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme. The excavation at site F at Cappakeel townland revealed a prehistoric ring-ditch (LA009-050), a linear ditch (LA009-051) of medieval date and a series of charcoal production pits. A large number of pits following a discernible pattern and interpreted as charcoal-production pits were uncovered. They were all subrectangular, measuring 2m by 1m, were quite shallow, packed with charcoal, and portrayed evidence of intense burning in situ (Bennett 2006, 289).   Description

  Aerial photograph (GB90.BL.08) shows cropmark of a circular enclosure defined by a fosse and with an entrance facing north-east. First recorded as a positive cropmark in July 1990. This enclosure is clearly visible on the aerial orthophotos on the OSI website - dated 2000. It is also faintly visible on the ASI website aerial coverage. The above report has been compiled by Dr. G.F. Barrett and supplied to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland.
