  Description

  No surface remains of house, which in any case was built 1810, except for traces of foundation. This was supposedly built on the site of an old house of the O'Dempsey's which according to Bence-Jones was remodelled in the 19th century (Bence-Jones 1978, 28). Described the house as consisting of 2 principal fronts, one of them low and nearly 200 feet in length, with battlements and pointed doors and windows, the other front higher and with a square tower. Old arch opposite hall door, surviving from the O'Dempsey house. Could the square tower be the remains of O'Dempsey's medieval Castle? Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007

  Description

  New monument discovered in 2003 during excavations of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme by Jonathan Dempsey of Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd under licence number 03E0623. This site was located in an area of deep fill and was protected and reburied and preserved in situ. Described as Ballyshaneduff or the Derries A this site consists of a subcircular pit with two fills which measured 1.1m N-S by 0.8m by 0.25m deep.   Description

  New monument discovered in 2003 during excavations of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme by Jonathan Dempsey of Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd under licence number 03E0623. This site was located in an area of deep fill and was protected and reburied and preserved in situ. Described as Jamestown B this site consisted of a charcoal-manufacturing kiln. It consisted of a subrectangular pit with rounded corners, gently sloping sides and a flat base. The pit measured 1.82m NE-SW by 1.1m by 0.17m deep. The base was heavily oxidised.   Description

  New monument uncovered during topsoil-stripping in advance of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme by Thaddeus Breen under excavation licence number 03E0662. Site was excavated between April and June 2004 and consisted of a low mound of burnt material covering a rectangular trough and a number of other pits showed that the site was a fulacht fiadh. Removal of a further deposit immediately to the E revealed a second fulacht fiadh (LA009-046) of similar construction. The two burnt mounds did not overlap, so it was not possible to determine which was the earlier or, indeed whether they were contemporary. This site was described as Fulacht A and consisted of an irregular-shaped spread of charcoal rich soil and heat-shattered stone, 18m by 15m (Bennett 2006, 287-8).   Description

  New monument uncovered during topsoil-stripping in advance of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme by Thaddeus Breen under excavation licence number 03E0662. Site was excavated between April and June 2004 and removal of a mound of burnt material revealed two fulachta fia (LA009-045/046) lying adjacent to each other. The two burnt mounds did not overlap, so it was not possible to determine which was the earlier or, indeed whether they were contemporary. This site was described as Fulacht B and consisted of an approx. circular spread of charcoal rich soil and heat-shattered stone, 13m by 1m. Like fulacht A (LA009-045) there wasa rectangular trough with stake-holes in the corners and a large irregular-shaped pit beside this (Bennett 2006, 288).   New monument uncovered during centre line testing by Eoghan Moore under licence number 03E0126 in advance of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme. Monument was then excavated by Gary Conboy for V. J. Keeley Ltd. Under licence number 03E0678. Described as site H,, which revealed in trench 5 a corn-drying kiln with a stone lined drying chamber, the flue was cut in two by a modern field ditch (Bennett 2006, 288-9).
