  Description

  Marked 'Grange Ho. (in Ruins) on the 1841 ed OS 6-inch map. In undulating countryside. A rectangular house (L c. 9.9m NW-SE, Wth c. 6.3m NE-SW) constructed of rubble limestone. Two storeys high with a third storey or attic in SE gable. Entrance, now blocked, in SW wall. Projecting chimney breast and tall chimney stack on NE wall and remains of a cornice. Internal dividing wall running NW-SE. Mentioned in OS letters as an old castle in ruins in the townland of Grangebeg (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, p. 15). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.
