  Description

  In pasture, on NW-facing flank of hill. Roughly circular area (13.4m N-S; 11.2m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.75m) with no apparent openings. Road skirts outer base of bank on NW side. Interior slopes down to NW, following local terrain, and has an undulating surface under grass except along margins which are overgrown with bushes; loose stones are scattered over interior.   Description

  In Abbeyfeale graveyard (LI042-012002-). No visible surface trace of roofless church 'with a lofty tower and pointed spire' shown on 17th century map (Westropp 1904-05, 404); there was some memory of this in 1840 though nothing then remained (OSL vol. 1, 42-3). This probably remains of parish church, though there are references to a 12th century Cistercian cell at Abbeyfeale (Gwynn & Hadcock 1988, 123). According to Westropp (ibid.) 'Some fragments of its walls stood in the graveyard, and are said to be embodied in the new Roman Catholic church' (OSL, 143). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

  Description

  In Abbeyfeale town, on S side of Main Street. Rectangular graveyard (c. 50m E-W; c. 30m N-S) bounded to S by houses. and elsewhere by stone wall; entrance near W end of S side. Just inside gate is neo-classical limestone chest tomb dated to 1830s; there are five further chest tombs along E wall and two near centre overgrown by sycamores. Otherwise filled with 19th and 20th century grave plots, the earliest headstones noted dating to 1820s. No visible surface trace of church/abbey which formerly stood here (LI042-012001-).   Detached five-bay double-height former boys' national school, dated 1913. Having two-bay gable-fronted traversing blocks to sides (north, south), having two-bay single-storey extension to front of northern traversing block. Later three-bay single-storey lean-to extension to front of main block. Lean-to porches to side elevations (north and south) and two-bay single-storey extension to rear (west) of main block. Pitched slate and artificial slate roofs, having render gable copings on tooled limestone impost blocks to traversing block gables. Rendered and red brick chimneystacks, uPVC rainwater goods and recent roof lights. Rendered walls throughout. Square-headed window openings with tooled limestone throughout with occasional render replacement sills, having replacement timber and uPVC casement windows. Recent iron-mesh window guards and iron-bar window guards to rear elevation openings. Square-headed door openings with tooled limestone stepped approaches to front elevation of porch (south) and rear (west) elevation of rear extension, having replacement timber battened doors. Timber panelled door to rear elevation of porch to side (north). Three-bay single-storey single pitched outbuilding to rear. Rendered enclosing wall with render coping, square-profile piers, capping and sliding metal boom to northern entrance. Situated within own grounds overlooking Straid Nua.
