• LI013-075 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in gently rolling pasture. The monument consiste of a circular area (diam. 30m NW-SE; 29.5m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank and outer fosse. The bank (int. H 0.2m; Wth 1.85m; et. H 0.5m) is evident all round as is the external fosse (D 0.2m; Wth 2.46m). The causeway entrance (Wth 4.5m) is at NE. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 24 April 2013

• LI013-076 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  This monument was excavated in 1997 and 1998 by Audrey Gahan, ADS (97E0285), in advance of the N20/N21 Adare-Anacotty road scheme. She described the monument as c. 30m diam, with a still extant bank measuring in places 1m above present ground level. Sections excavated through the ditch showed it to be roughly U-shaped and on average 4.2m wide and 1.5m deep. It was filled to a large extent by slippage from the bank and no organic remains were recovered. A sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from the fill. The bank was composed of redeposited subsoil, almost certainly upcast from the ditch construction. Within the bank, two whetstones and part of a rotary quern were recovered. Internal features consisted of a scatter of post-holes, which indicated no apparent structure. She suggests the site may be a ringwork rather than a ringfort and therefore date to the 12th century.   Description

  The townland of Ashfort was known as Eanach an Róistigh / Annaghrosty also referred to as Ballyrosty. Earthworks in field visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 which is annotated 'Castle Field' on 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map may represent the remains of the castle and bawn (LI013-077001-) of Annaghrostie. It is possible that Ashfort Cottage located 90m to WNW may have been built on site of castle. Westropp (1906-07, 154) recorded the following details about Ashfort or Annaghrostie Castle; ' "Castle Field" marked. 1542 Anaroche held by Tege O'Brene (Carew, i., p. 202) and by Brian Duff, 1584 (Fi. 4486, 4615). 1600 N. Stritch held a moiety of the C[astle]. and surrounding wall or bawn of Annagh Rosin (Inq. Exch., 50, 54; Chan. 10a). 1609 The ford of Anagh Irestie and brook at Anagh Irestie (Perambulation Deed). 1657 It was then in Mungret, and lay near the stream opposite Greenmount (C.S., p. 11; Petty Map, 64; D.S.A., 1). 1667 Confirmed to E.   Description

  Earthworks in field visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 which is annotated 'Castle Field' on 1840 ed. It is possible that the orchard to the N of Ashfort Cottage located 90m to WNW may be an alternative site for castle bawn.
