Description
On a slight N-facing slope 90m W of townland boundary with Ballymartin. Not depicted on the 1840 0S 6-inch map or the 1897 25-inch OS map. Identified from an examination of aerial photographs of the region during work on the Curraleigh–Limerick gas pipeline in 1986 (BGE 1:10000 No. 42). - LI031-006 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a natural, low-lying ridge, in gently undulating pasture, 305m W of a townland boundary with Monaster North. Ringfort (LI031-008----) lies 300m to ENE. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a circular-shaped area (18m N-S; 16m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 4.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.2m) which has numerous livestock gaps from NW-N-NE and which is reduced to a scarp (Wth 2.2m; H 0.5m) from NE-E-S-SSW. Gap (Wth 2.4m) at N. The interior has a gentle WNW-facing slope. The surrounding field boundaries have been removed. Monument is visible as a subcircular-shaped tree-lined earthwork on OSi aerial orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. - LI031-007 Ringfort - rath
Description
In gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions, abuts a townland boundary with Monaster North to the immediate SE. Ringfort (LI031-223----) lies 220m to WNW. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a raised oval-shaped area (22m E-W; 19m N-S) defined by a scarp (Wth 1.9m; H 1.25m) with fosse (overall Wth 6.8m; basal Wth 1.2m; D 0.25m) and possible remains of an outer bank (Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.2m) visible at SW with entrance (Wth 4m) at NW. The fosse is visible from SSW-W-N-NNE and has been infilled from NNE-E-S-SW, where later field boundaries enclose the monument. The interior has gentle SSE-facing slope. Monument is visible as a subcircular-shaped earthwork on OSi aerial orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. - LI031-008 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level pasture, 70m N of a townland boundary with Monaster North. Enclosure (LI031-006----) lies 300m to WSW. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi map as a substantial circular-shaped enclosure. The SW bank of the monument was levelled between 1840 and the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map where the monument is depicted as a penannular-shaped earthwork transected by a post-1700 field boundary at SW. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a D-shaped area (32m NW-SE; 30m NE-SW) defined by a scarp (Wth 3.0m; H 1.15m) and an earth and stone field boundary (Wth 4.25m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.65m) aligned with mature hedgerow from ENE-E-S. A slight linear scarp forms the W-side of the monument, where a former field boundary has been removed. An external fosse (overall Wth 8.2m; basal Wth 3.2m; D 0.25m) is visible from NW-N-NNE and traces of fosse (Wth 3.55m; D 0.2m) are visible from SE-E-SSE. The interior is grass covered and is traversed by a stone wall field boundary running ENE-WSW across the NW quadrant and also by a trackway (Wth 2.2m) across the SE quadrant. Monument is visible as a roughly C-shaped area open to SW on OSi aerial orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. - LI031-223 Ringfort - rath
Description
In level pasture in the NW corner of a field with numerous natural undulations 185m NW of the townland boundary with Monaster North. A ringfort (LI031-007----) is located 210m to ESE and a ringfort (LI031-006----) lies 165m to NE. The site is not depicted on OSi historic maps although it is visible on both on both the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthophoto taken 2011-2013. Identified by the ASI in 2008 during field survey of a ringfort (LI031-007----) in the same field. The site consists of a raised oval-shaped area (dims. 22m N-S; 26m E-W) enclosed by a levelled bank (Wth 14.9m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 1.75m) almost reduced to a scarp. Obvious entrance gap (overall Wth 10.0m; basal Wth 3.0m) at S. Interior slopes down gently from the levelled bank to a level area in the centre. Exterior of bank truncated by field boundary (orientated WSW-ENE) on the NW and N side of the fort. A second field boundary (orientated N-S) includes a deep drain close to the ringfort bank on the W side. Livestock erosion visible on the external face of the bank at SE. Possible traces of an external fosse visible from NNE-S. Raised area to S of entrance may be natural and forms terminus of fosse.
