• LI012-070001 Kiln - lime
  Description

  In pasture, 35m W of Cloonanna church (LI012-070002-) and graveyard (LI012-070003-). The River Maigue lies 230m to W. Built into the S face of natural rock outcrop. Present remains consist of partially collapsed post-medieval limekiln constructed of well-coursed rubble stone (H.4.5m) bonded with lime mortar and cement. The round-arched opening(H 1.4m, base Wth. 4.85m) on the S side is constructed with red brick surround.   Description

  Westropp records the following details about Cloonanna Church; 'An ancient parish in Pubblebrian, now merged. Clonany, 1291. John Purcel claimed dower on Clonany Hyrtherag, 1318 (Plea R. 123 of xi Ed. II, m. 4) ; Cluainanny, 1418; Clunany, in Croom, 1615 A.; Cluonnanna, a parish, 1655 (D.S. (B.), 27; Civil Survey, p. 34); Clounana Temple granted to W. Barker, 1667 (Act. Sett.). Fabric - The west end, and much of the sides, remained in 1875. I am told that much has been since levelled' (Westropp 1904-5, 385). Begley (1906, 268) recorded that 'The church of Cloonanna, a rectory belonging to the rectory of Croom, and hath a vicar. The ruins of this old church stand on a rising ground commanding a pleasant prospect on the east bank of the Maigue, and to the north of Adare parish. A few fragments of the old church still remain'. Poorly preserved remains of medieval church of which the W gable of the church remains upstanding with the lower courses of the W end of the S wall (L 4.1m; H 2.35m; T 0.74m) surviving and a short return of the NW angle which has been modified by a modern burial plot.   Description

  In pasture, on a slight W facing slope with excellent views to W. Present remains consist of a raised roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 24m) defined by a scarp (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.6m; base Wth. 4.2m) mostly quarried away from SW to NW, incorporated into a relic field boundary at N. A farm track abuts the monument at S. The interior is level.   Description

  In pasture, on a slight W facing slope with excellent views to W and NW. No surface remains visible. Google Earth orthoimage taken 2004 shows a circular–shaped crop mark in the area which is not clearly visible Google Earth imagery 2020. No antiquity depicted at this location on OS map. Indicated as a sub-rectangular shaped field on 1840 OS map. Depicted as a small polygonal shaped field (approx. dims. 30m N-S x 30m E-W ) on OS 25-inch map. Could be the remains of a post-1700 paddock associated with farm building to N.   Description

  In pasture, on a slight W facing slope. Present remains consist of a raised roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 30m) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.4m; base Wth. 3.7m). Stone revetment forms the inner face of bank from NE through E to SE while elsewhere the bank is constructed of rubble with an earthen core. A gap (Wth. 1.8m) at NW is probably a livestock entrance. The interior is level. Outline of tree-covered monument visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 2020.
