Description
In reclaimed pasture 40m W of the River Maigue and 80m NW of a watercourse that marks the townland boundary with Knockfenora. Fording point over the River Maigue 125m to the N. Depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a raised circular-shaped area (diam. c. 60m). The 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map shows the partially level monument as a raised semi-shaped area (dims. c. 65m N-S; 55m E-W) defined by a scarp truncated from E-S-SSW by a post-1700 field boundary running N-S and at S by a field boundary running NW-SE. The monument is visible as a roughly oval-shaped area (dims. c. 62m NE-SW; 47m NW-SE) defined by a fosse, intersected at NE by a field boundary running NE-SW on OSi orthophoto taken 2005-2012. Outline of monument clearly visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-13. Outline of monument visible as a D-shaped cropmark on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. Description
In pasture 280m E of the River Maigue that marks the townland boundary with Dromacummer West. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a raised irregular-shaped area (dims. 24m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by a fosse only visible from SE-S-SW, intersected at W by the former Limerick to Chareville railway track running NW-SE. Scrub-covered monument visible immediately E of the former railway track on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. Recorded in the Ordnance Survey Field Name Books as one of '2 ancient forts, one in the S. [LI039-056----] and another about the central part of the townland' (OSNB Bruree Parish). Description
Single-span limestone railway bridge, built c. 1862, with rusticated walls with buttresses to north and south elevations and square-plan rusticated piers having carved caps and plinths to parapet walls. Cut copings to parapet walls. Cast-iron girders to underside of arch.
