  Description

  In grassland, in SE corner of field 130m E of townland boundary with Toberagarriff. Depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank with transected at S and E by post-1700 field boundaries. This map depicts Farnane House 300m to E with a separate tree lined avenue running S from the R506 for a distance of 175m. The avenue stops 55m to N of the enclosure. The 1897 OS 25-inch map depicts a raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 20m) defined by a scarp. Digital Globe aerial photography taken 2011-13 shows the outline of the enclosure in the SE corner of the field with a number of gaps particularly at N. Outline of poorly preserved monument visible Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. On this image than enclosing bank is visible from E through S to SSW with the remainder of the enclosing element denuded and large gaps visible at N and NE. Could have been a ringfort that was reused as a landscape feature of the lands surrounding Farnane House. Alternatively it may be the remains of a post-1700 tree-ring contemporaneous with Farnane House.   Description

  In a heavily overgrown area immediately N of farmyard and farm buildings, 230m N of R506. Annotated 'Lissadoon' on 1840 OS 6-inch map where it is depicted as a circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank with a farmyard road 100m to E. On the 1897 OS 25-inch map it is located at the S end of a small irregular shaped field, the SE boundary of which reflects the curve of the ringfort. This map depicts a circular-shaped raised area (approx. int. diam. 27m; ext. diam. 34m) defined by a scarp with the interior and exterior planted with trees. Imagery from both Digital Globe 2011-2013 and Google Earth 2018 shows the tree covered monument standing immediately N of farm buildings surrounded by a farm track.   Description

  Situated at the base of a gentle SW-facing slope in gently rolling pasture with good views in all directions apart from in the W where the land rises sharply. The monument is partially obscured by scrub vegetation. It is evident as a roughly circular area (27m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; Wth 2.15m; ext. H 0.4m).   Description

  Situated in a wooded area c. 50m NE of a Georgian house and garden. On a natural scarp with a sharp drop to the E, with good views in all directions. Indicated on the 1923 OS 6-inch map as a sub-circular area (diam. c. 20m) defined by a scarp, near to 'Castle, site of'. The monument is covered by dense vegetation overgrowth.   Description

  Westropp (1906-07, 99-100) recorded the following details about Castlecomfort; 'This very probably the last named. In 1840 the house was said to stand on the site of an old castle (O.S.L., 8. 444). It adjoins Aghacore, and "core" may have been taken for "cobhair," assistance, relief, or [in the old sense] "comfort".' In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that Castle Comfort or Caisleán na bPaerach/ Castle of the Powers 'was built in 1824 at a cost of about £800. It is 2 story high, is placed on an eminence, and takes its name from a castle that stood on the site in days of old' (OSNB Abington Parish, 38). Circular-shaped platform located 10m E of Castle Comfort appears to mark the site of the levelled castle. 19th century house described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) as a, 'Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1820, with entrance through single-storey porch to side. Hipped roof with rendered chimneystacks and pots. Rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with timber sash windows. Square-headed door opening with fanlight and side lights. Multiple-bay two-storey stables and outbuildings to rear across courtyard. Pitched slate roof. Limestone walls. Square-headed window and door openings with red brick surrounds. Round-headed and elliptical-headed vehicular openings. Square-headed dormer opening. Walled garden' (www.buildingsofireland.ie; NIAH Reg. No. 21901424). • LI014-148 Burial
  Description

  In May 1988 human remains were discovered during construction of cattle pen, c. 1m below ground level. A brief archaeological investigation revealed that the bones, which also included horse bones, were disarticulated and deposited in a brown silty soil. This deposit was probably part of the fill of the ditch of adjacent Castle Comfort (LI014-017002-). A radiocarbon date for the bone yielded the calibrated date of 1290-1430 AD.
