  Description

  Depicted as an oval-shaped tree plantation (approx. diam. 66m) on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map where it is shown standing on the demesne landscape of Green Mount. Situated on a W-facing slope of a hill in undulating pasture, in the modern grounds of Limerick racecourse. Visible today on Digital Globe aerial imagery as an oval-shaped grove of trees. Not depicted as an antiquity on an edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Its location on the demesne landscape of Green Mount suggests that this earthwork represents the remains of a tree-ring of post-1700 date. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 14 May 2020

  Situated on an E-facing slope, overlooking an artificial lake to the E, and c. 10m N of a possible hut site (LI013-064002-). The monument, depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as a circular area (diam. c 40m) enclosed by a bank, has been levelled and there was no evident trace of it when the monument was inspected. • LI013-065 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a rise, in an area of rough pasture and woodland. The monument that is depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as an oval enclosure (c. 75m N-S; c. 60m E-W) is largely masked by dense woodland vegetation. • LI013-068001 Field system
  Description

  Situated on W facing slope of a gentle ridge in rolling pasture, an enclosure (LI013-068003----) lies c. 10m to the NW and ringfort (LI013-068002----) 40m to the NW. Recorded as linear features by Celie O'Rahilly in 1995. The site was inspected in 2004 and described as a possible field system consisting of a ridge that has been scarped (Wth 6m; H 1m) and a bank (L 30m; Wth 3.2m; H 0.2m) runs from the scarp down the slope to W. Cropmark of possible field system visible on Digital Globe orthophoto taken 2011-13. Cropmark of field system visible on Google Earth orthoimages. • LI013-068002 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a natural ridge, on a S-facing slope immediately S of a track in gently rolling pasture, c. 30m NW of LI013-068003-; c. 40m NE 0f LI013-06801-. There are good views to W, S and E. Indicated on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as a sub-oval area (c. 40m NW-SE; 40m N-S) enclosed by two banks and an intervening fosse, truncated by the field boundary to the N. Survives as a sub-oval area (30.6m E-W) enclosed by a bank to E and S (int. H 0.3m; Wth. 2.4m; ext. H 0.6m) and a scarp edge to W (Wth. 10.6m; H 1m). There is a fosse (Wth. 5m) and gentle outer bank to E and S (int. H c. 0.1m; Wth. 1.6m; ext. H 0.2m). There is a further scarp edge to W (Wth. 4.4m; H 0.6m). There is a gentle dip in the internal bank to S (Wth. 6m). The interior slopes down to E.

• LI013-068003 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a ridge in gently rolling pasture c. 30m SE of LI013-068002-; c. 10m NE of LI013-068001-. Roughly rectangular area (23m N-S; c. 22m E-W) enclosed to N, W and S by a bank (int. H 0.3m; Wth. 1m; ext. H 0.1m).

• LI013-068004 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a ridge in gently rolling pasture. Good views in all directions. Sub-oval area (38m N-S; 30m E-W), defined by a bank, fosse and in places an external bank. The internal bank (int. H 0.3m; Wth. 3.45m; ext. H 0.3m) is fairly uniform, apart from in the E and W where it has been truncated by a field drain. The fosse (Wth. 0.6m) is evident from SE to NE, and has been truncated by the field drain to W. The external bank (int. H 0.3m; Wth. 4.7m; ext. H 0.2m) is visible only from the SE to the SW. The interior is uneven, with quarrying probably having taken place in the S and SE of the interior. There is a small circular mound in the interior (diam. 9m NE-SW; H 0.1m).

• LI013-068005 Mound
  Description

  In deciduous woodland on SE facing slope, 70m S of the Barnakyle River, a ringfort (LI013-068002----) lies immediately to S. Depicted as a woodland area on the demesne lands of Green Mount House located 500m to WNW. Listed as Site No. 26 by Celie O'Rahilly in 1995 and described as following; ‘This is located at the northern end of [Ringfort] LI013-068002-. It consists of a wooded ridge of high ground, extending north-south. To the west and north it slopes steeply with a sharp well-defined rounded drop, while to the north-east the slope is gentler. To the east-south-east, the fall is sheer with exposed rock. The south-eastern side is defined by a wall and the road which separates this from the enclosure. The interior is planted with mature trees. This may be a natural formation, but its height, making it easily defendable, and proximity to the complex LI013--068001 -/004-, may mean the two were associated.' Site inspected in 2004 when it was recorded that no surface remains visible of any earthwork of archaeological significance could be identified in the woodland area.   Description

  Situated atop a hill overlooking rolling pasture. Depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch as an oval area (c. 35m E-W; c. 30m N-S) defined by a scarped edge, and named 'Lissard' . The scarp (Wth 4.2m; H 1.1m) is now obscured by recently planted conifers. The interior surface is relatively even and partially covered by scrub vegetation.   Situated on an E-facing slope in gently rolling pasture, c. 200m W of a newly-built house. The monument has been levelled. Indicated on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as a sub-oval area (c. 25m E-W; 30m N-S) enclosed by a bank.

• LI013-155001 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a gentle E-facing slope on pasture. C. 10m S of this point a bank (L 28m E-W; H 0.15m; Wth. 2m) is visible. C. 5m to the N of the bank a scarp (L 21m NE-SW; H 0.12m; Wth. 2.9m) runs towards the field boundary to the N.

• LI013-155002 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a gentle E-facing slope on pasture, adjacent to Limerick racecourse. At the same grid ref. an enclosure is recorded in the RMP. Neither are marked on the OS 6-inch maps. Roughly 10m S of this point a bank (L 28m E-W; H 0.15m; Wth. 2m) is visible. C. 5m to the N of the bank a scarp (L 21m NE-SW; H 0.12m; Wth. 2.9m) runs towards the field boundary to the N.

• LI013-157 Field system
  Description

  Situated on a gentle S-facing slope in gently rolling pasture with good views to N, W and S. The monument is not visible at ground level.

• LI013-177 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Identified as Site A during archaeological monitoring associated with the development of Limerick Racecourse (Licence No. 98E0252). Excavated under licence no. 98Eo252 by Edmond O’Donovan (O’Donovan 1998) when it was described as followng; ‘ a dense black staining immediately under the topsoil. A cutting measuring 4.2m north-south by 2.5m was opened on the spread. Four small extensions to the cutting were added to define the extent of the activity on the eastern, western and southern sides. Excavation revealed a roughly circular pit measuring 2.5m in diameter cut into the boulder clay. The pit was shallow and had an uneven base. A shallow trench was present along the northern edge of the feature. The trench was between 0.8m/0.4m wide and 0.15m deep. The remainder of the pit gently sloped in from the edges. The pit was filled with compact boulder clay, including occasional patches of burnt clay and charcoal. The pit fill was sealed by a dense charcoal spread and was located at the south side of the pit. The charcoal staining covered a roughly rectangular area, measuring 1.10m north/south, 1m east/west and was 0.6m deep. Traces of in situ burning was evident. No finds were associated with the site (0’Donovan 1998, 2, (www.excavations.ie; O'Donovan 2000, 134). Compiled by: Martin Fitzpatrick Date upload: 29 June 2020

• LI013-178 Barrow - unclassified
  Description

  In pasture, approx. 50m NW of ringfort (LI013-170001-) and immediately W of ringfort (LI013-071----). Not depicted on the 1840 0S 6-inch map or the 1897 25-inch OS map. Identified as site 29 by Celie O’Rahilly, archaeologist, Limerick Corporation as part of an archaeological assessment for the development of a racecourse at Greenmount, Co. Limerick. It was described as following; ‘a hollow sub-circular area circa. 30m north-south. The western side is higher due to the sloping ground and it is open to the east.
