  Description

  In reclaimed pasture 115m E of a roadway that marks the townland boundary with Tobernae West. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a circular enclosure. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised oval-shaped area (dims. c. 29m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) defined by a scarp with fosse and external bank from SE-S-W-N. Truncated at E by stream running N-S and intersected at S by field boundary running E-W. Outline of scrub-covered monument visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages. See attached Google Earth orthoimages.   Description

  In pasture 20m S of the townland boundary with Tobernea Milddle. Tobernea holy well (LI047-089----) 55m to NNW. Earthwork associated with site of Tobernea Castle (LI074-073002-) located in the centre of the earthwork. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised roughly circular-shaped platform (diam. c. 29m) defined by a scarp with fosse from SE-S-SW. Levelled earthwork is visible as a roughly circular-shaped cropmark defined by a fosse on Google Earth orthoimages. Earthwork may be the remains of an earthen bawn of Tobernea Castle.   Description

  Site of levelled castle in pasture in cebtre of circular shaped earthwork (LI047-073001-) with Tobernea holy well (LI047-089----) 55m to NNW. Westropp (1906-7, 173) recorded the following details about Leagane or Tobornea Castle; '1537 Jas. f.Desmond took the profits of the manor of "Tibernius," estate of late Tho., Earl of Kildare (Carew i., p. 132). 1629 W. Creagh, of Miltown, was appointed seneschal of Tuberneagh and other manors of G., Earl of Kildare, as formerly held by Peircy Smith (App. 9 Rep., y. 292). A heap of stones was called Tobornea C[astle], 1840 (O.S.L., 8, p. 344). A doubtful site'. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey described the site as; 'there was an old Castle in Leagaun Townland, of which nothing remains now but a heap of rubbish. it was called Leagaun (Líagán) Castle. Tobernea Castle, north of Leagaun Townland, is the name given for in the Name Book of this Parish' (O'Flanagan 1929, 99). The Ordnance Survey Name Books recorded that; 'near a road are the ruins of Tobernea Castle, nearly in the shape of a fort [LI047-073001-]' (OSNB Effin Parish).
