• LI023-004001 Mound
  Description

  In improved pasture, at N edge of low hill with extensive views to W, N and E. No evident trace of mound that Barry (1916-1919, 11 & photo opposite) describes as '150 feet round the base and from 10 to 12 feet high'. An electricity pole stands in the vicinity of where the mound stood. Barry (ibid.) also mentions another mound (LI023-004002-) and two enclosures (LI023-004003- & LI023-004004-) in the vicinity of this mound but their exact location is not known.   Description

  In gently undulating pasture. Monument depicted as circular enclosure on 1840 OS map and as arc of hachured bank SSE to WNW, is now evident as a linear ridge (L 26m N-S; Wth 30.5m; int. • LI023-006 Castle - tower house
  Description

  In pasture, on top of rise. Only standing remains is ivy-covered stump of NW angle (external L 1.95m N-S; external L 2.7m E-W) of rectangular structure (c. 11m E-W; c. 9m N-S) otherwise reduced to sod-covered banks (Wth c. 1.8m; H c. 1.2m). Small wallpress on inside face of E wall. Most of lower facing is missing on exterior faces. Substantial block of fallen masonry lies immediately S of stump. Earlies mention of castle here mid-16th century when hely by Burke family (Westropp 1906-1907, 92-3). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 30 October 2013

• LI023-008 Kerb circle
  Description

  In pasture, on highest point of a rocky crag (long axis N-S) affording excellent views all around. Circular area (12.5m N-S; 12m E-W) defined by gentle scarped edge (Wth 5.2m; H 0.3m) with embedded kerb stones. Kerb best preserved around southern arc, with four stones at WNW-NW and two at NW. Other more widely spaced stones around northern arc. Upright stone (LI023-010----) is off-centre to ESE in interior. Shallow hollow, with remnants of mortar and loose stone, is off-centre to N in interior. This is probable location of the 'turret' (Barry 1896) a large fragment of which lies at NNW edge of monument . This was erected in 1829 'to commemmorate Catholic Emancipation' but fell in 1897 (ibid.). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 31 October 2013

  Description

  In pasture, on a NNW-facing slope at base of steep crag. Not marked on 1840 OS map but depicted on 1928 OS 6-inch map as a trackway (long-axis WSW-ENE; L c. 200m) named 'Boherboulinae (track of)'. This is now evident as a slight terrace (L c. 88m; Wth 4m) cut (D 1.0m) into hill-slope to S and raised (H 0.85m) on N-side, to provide a level area. • LI023-127 Standing stone
  Description

  In elevated scrubby pasture, on the highest point of a rocky crag (595 ft/181m), with commanding views in all directions. Within the SE quadrant of a kerb circle (LI023-008----) known locally as ‘Leaba na Muice’. Annotated ‘Boughilbreaga’ on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map. Depicted on the 1897 OSi 25-inch map as a rectangular-shaped pillar stading upright in SE quadrant of stone circle (LI023-008----). Described by Barry (1900, 375) as following: ‘On the top of Ludden hill there are the remains of a stone circle and a pillar-stone (Bouchall Breagha), not marked, and adjoining is Leaba na Muice’. Recorded by the ASI in 2007 and described as an upright stone (H 2.4m; 1.3m x 0.3m) rectangular in plan with its long-axis orientated N-S and with a subrectangular-shaped elevation. Monument is visible in the SE quadrant of the stone circle on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018.   Description

  In improved pasture, at N edge of low hill with extensive views to W, N and E. Mound (LI023-004001-) lies 5m to N. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Described by Barry as ‘two liagan stones, one prostrate’ (Barry 1916-19, 11). Described in 2000 by John McInerney of Raheen, Co. Limerick as a pillar stone (L 10’/3.05m; T 2’/0.61m) which had recently been moved to a nearby field boundary. Photograph provided shows a long pillar type stone with a narrow rectangular-shaped elevation, lying prostrate at its present location. Monument is not visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthophoto taken 2011-2013 or on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018.
