• LF010-046 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a low knoll in undulating pasture. Depicted as a large circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. A raised oval-shaped area (c. 42m NNE-SSW; c. 36m ENE-WSW) defined from ENE-S-NW by a scarp (H 1-1.5m). From SSW-W-NW the scarp has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary and from NW-N-NNE the monument is clipped by a roadway. The original entrance is not recognisable. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded traces of an external fosse, which are no longer identifiable. The monument is densely overgrown with scrub. Compiled by: Patrick F. • LF010-047 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a steep SSW-facing slope in pasture. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded that this raised circular area (diam. 46.4m) was defined by a bank and external fosse, with an outer bank from S-SW-W. The interior was divided into roughly equal portions by a low E-W bank. Within the N half were a number of wide, shallow depressions. The rath is defined by a scarp (H 0.9-2.1m) with an external fosse. The fosse (Wth 3.2m; D 0.1-0.3m) is shallow and waterlogged from WNW-N-NE where a modern field boundary extends around its outer lip. From NE-E-SE both it and the scarp have been destroyed due to the construction of modern field boundaries. From SE-S-SW the circuit and morphology of the fosse have been substantially altered where it has been incorporated into a field boundary. From SW-W-WNW it has been infilled but its outline is still identifiable. The original entrance is not recognisable.   Description

  On a N-facing slope in pasture. A raised oval area (47m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed from SE-W-N by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.5-7m; H 0.2-0.6m) and elsewhere defined by a scarp (H 1-2.1m). A shallow external fosse (Wth 6.5-8.5m; D 0.4m) is visible from S-W-N; although infilled from NNE-E-SE, its outline may still be traced. A low outer bank (Wth 4.5-5.6m; H 0.4-0.7m) survives from W-NW-N. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 23 November 2011
