  Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0477). An area measuring c. 4800sq m was excavated (Chapple 2002, 210-12). A variety of different structures and phases of activity were identified. Two large boundary ditches (LH021-065001- and LH021-065002-), an industrial site (LH021-065003-), a hut site (LH021-065004-) and a kiln (LH021-065005-) date to the Early Christian period. Three structures (LH021-065006-, LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-) date to the Medieval period. This portion of excavated ditch (LH021-065001-) (L 40m; average Wth 3m; D 2m) was curvilinear in shape with a terminal at the eastern end. It has a projected diam. of 70m. Three separate re-cuts were evident and 24 different fills recorded. A second or possible inner ditch (LH021-065002-) lay approximately 21m to the S.   Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0477). An area measuring c. 4800sq m was excavated (Chapple 2002, 210-12). A variety of different structures and phases of activity were identified. Two large boundary ditches (LH021-065001- and LH021-065002-), an industrial site (LH021-065003-), a hut site (LH021-065004-) and a kiln (LH021-065005-) date to the Early Christian period. Three structures (LH021-065006-, LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-) date to the Medieval period. This portion of excavated ditch (LH021-065002-) (L 39m; average Wth 3m; D 1.5m) was roughly L-shaped and lay c. 21m to S of a possible outer ditch (LH021-065001-). An eastern terminal was identified but on western limit of excavation the ditch continued into the section. Over 70 different fills were noted. There were numerous finds including flints, iron slag, burnt bone and pieces of a shattered rotary quernstone. Also found was a small stone-lined hearth containing a blue glass bead.   Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0477). An area measuring c. 4800sq m was excavated (Chapple 2002, 210-12). A variety of different structures and phases of activity were identified. Two large boundary ditches (LH021-065001- and LH021-065002-), an industrial site (LH021-065003-), a hut site (LH021-065004-) and a kiln (LH021-065005-) date to the Early Christian period. Three structures (LH021-065006-, LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-) date to the Medieval period. This industrial site (LH021-065003-) was located just S of two substantial ditches (LH021-065001- and LH021-065002-). Nine postholes represented a roughly rectangular structure (7.37m x 2.1m). One of the postholes produced some iron slag and fragments of worked iron. Two possible entrances were noted along with an internal hearth. Large quantities of charcoal and ash were revealed on the floor. Some fifteen stakeholes on the SW side of the structure may have represented a wall of post and wattle construction. Three structures (LH021-065006-, LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-) date to the Medieval period. This hut site (LH021-065004-) was located between two ditches (LH021-065001- and LH021-065002-) and immediately N of the inner ditch (LH021-065002-). Composed of two arcing cuts, one of which had two postholes cut into its base. These two cuts appeared to be part of a circular structure with a diam. of c. 4m.   Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0477). An area measuring c. 4800sq m was excavated (Chapple 2002, 210-12). A variety of different structures and phases of activity were identified. Two large boundary ditches (LH021-065001- and LH021-065002-), an industrial site (LH021-065003-), a hut site (LH021-065004-) and a kiln (LH021-065005-) date to the Early Christian period. Three structures (LH021-065006-, LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-) date to the Medieval period. This kiln (LH021-065005-) was located at N edge of the complex. It was keyhole in shape, with a short linear opening to the W. Its base and part of the walls were lined with flat stones. Carbonised grain recovered from the fill would suggest it may have functioned as a corn drying kiln. The only diagnostic find was a blue glass bead. Three structures (LH021-065006-, LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-) date to the Medieval period. This structure (LH021-065006-) was found close to the two other medieval structures (LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-). Excavation revealed a cut (Wth 0.75m; D 0.5m) of sub-rectangular shape with rounded corners (7m N-S by 5.2m E-W). Site was heavily truncated and both the eastern part of the structure and any occupational surfaces had been removed. Excavation revealed a semi-circular truncated cut (Wth 1m; D 0.09m) with a projected diam. of c. 6m. Cut was filled with burnt clay and a charcoal rich soil. A rectangular building (3.7m x 3.2m) defined by four substantial post-pits, three of which displayed evidence for burning, with an entrance at the SE and a small hearth in the centre. This structure and four others (see LH021-080----, LH021-081----, LH021-082---- and LH021-083----) appeared to have both domestic and ritual functions. A large assemblage of artefacts was recovered from the area of the five structures including 238 sherds of Grooved Ware which represented at least 23 individual pots, 30 flint scrapers, a large collection of flint débitage, a fragment of a polished stone axe and a small quantity of burnt bone.   Description

  Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0943). Four pits found c. 5m to the W of a cremation (LH021-076----). Two were oval shaped (max. diam. of each 0.42m), while the third was circular (diam. c. 0.22m). They were filled with charcoal flecked soil and contained no finds. The fourth was of irregular shape (3.7m E-W x 0.85m N-S) and appeared to have been truncated. Six sherds of coarse Bronze Age pottery were found on a metalled surface at the base of this pit. A structure (3.5m x 3m) was defined by four post-pits and surrounded by nine post-pits that formed an oval shape (max. diam. 6.5m). The excavator (Ó Drisceoil 2003, 256) suggests that this structure may have functioned as a Timber Circle. This structure and four others (see LH021-071----, LH021-080----, LH021-082---- and LH021-083----) appeared to have both domestic and ritual functions. A large assemblage of artefacts was recovered from the area of the five structures including 238 sherds of Grooved Ware which represented at least 23 individual pots, 30 flint scrapers, a large collection of flint débitage, a fragment of a polished stone axe and a small quantity of burnt bone.
