  Reference by Rev. L. P. Murray (1935, 233) to 'an old thatched chapel at Coolfore' during Penal times. Field inspection carried out by ASI in 1965 noted that a local woman was told by her great grandmother of its existence, but the precise location is not known.   Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0795), beside a stream on fen peat at the bottom of a gentle N facing slope. Approximately half the site was destroyed before excavation commenced. Excavation revealed a thin layer of burnt stones and charcoal rich soil under which lay 19 stakeholes.   Description

  Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0794). Excavation of an area 50m x 40m led to the discovery of two Neolithic Structures (LH021-072---- and LH021-078----), a cobbled surface and c. 40 pits (LH021-079----). One of the Neolithic structures was rectangular in shape (9.2m x 6m). It was represented by three large post holes and an incomplete foundation trench which varied in depth from 0.2m to 0.02m. A second trench just S of the structure may have functioned as a drip-trench. Nothing survived of the interior of the structure. A number of sherds of Neolithic pottery together with both burnt and un-burnt flint flakes were recovered from the trenches.   Description

  Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0794). Excavation of an area 50m x 40m area led to the discovery of two Neolithic Structures (LH021-072---- and LH021-078----), a cobbled surface (situated between the two structures) and approximately 40 pits (LH021-079----). This structure was smaller in size (6m x 5.1m) and better preserved than the other (LH021-072----) which was located 9m to the S. Its outline was marked by a foundation trench which varied in depth from 0.14m to 0.04m and contained remnants of burnt planks. Three postholes, two pits and a possible hearth were identified in the interior along with a number of sherds of Neolithic pottery.   Description

  Freestanding monumental limestone entrance gateway, built 1869. Triumphal arch form with round-headed carriage opening set within square-headed surround crowned by limestone parapet. Limestone rubble masonry with tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs, string course and rebate. Carved limestone plaque with hood moulding bearing inscription and date 1869, to west elevation. Formerly served as entrance to Monasterboice House, now narrow public road, fronting on to wider road to west, very overgrown, vegetation possibly masking boundary wall to north and south.
