• LH006-060001 Souterrain
  Description

  Discovered during building construction. The souterrain consists of a passage (L 17.2m, Wth 1m, H 0.9m-1.5m) running N-S, with the original entrance at the N end. At the S end of the first passage is a second passage (L 14.6m, Wth 1.1m, H 1.2m) running SW. A third passage (L 6.7m, Wth 0.9m, H 1.2m) runs SE from the SW end of the second passage. A drop-hole formed by a gap in the lintels, 2.7m from the SE end of the third passage gives access to a fourth passage (L 3.9m, Wth 0.9m, H 1.4m) extending SW at an upper level. At the SW end of the fourth passage is a second drophole giving access to a fifth passage (L 19.7m, Wth 0.8m-1m, H 1.2m) extending SW at the lower level and terminating in the middle of the NE side of a gallery (L 10.7m, Wth 1.7m, H 1.7m) aligned NW-SE. (CLAJ 1959, 148-53) This is a national monument in the guardianship of the State (No. 526), but it is closed to the public for the foreseeable future, because of damaged lintels (Dundalk Democrat 11/04/2017).   Description

  Souterrain situated adjacent to souterrain LH006-060001-. Its full extent is unrecorded as the site was delintelled and backfilled in antiquity. One of the passages of the souterrain passes close to the modern entrance of the previous site (LH006-060001-). The original entrance of the souterrain was located NE of the entrance to LH006-060001- and consisted of a slope, with cavities in the drystone walling suggesting a possible door.   A small section of a U-shaped fosse (D c. 1.15m) was discovered in 1979 during construction works associated with the installation of a septic tank. It was situated c. 14m WSW of the entrance of souterrain (LH006-060001-). Fragments of burnt bone and animal bone were noted in the fill of the fosse. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 6 December 2011 Wrongly ascribed to Thomastown townland by Tempest (CLAJ 1912, 23-3). The souterrain is recorded as consisting of a circular chamber at the W end, with a passage leading off E to three sub-rectangular chambers leading off one another and connected by creeps (Wth 1m, H 0.9m). Total length of souterrain 18.9m. The end chamber was capped by a millstone which may be a later insertion to close a breach in the roof. Now inaccessible.

• LH007-169 Ring-ditch
  Description

  Discovered during an archaeological testing programme, prior to the construction of the Dundalk Western Bypass (Excavation Licence No. 02E1583). Excavation revealed the remains of a circular foundation trench (diam. c. 6.75m - 7m; max. D 0.48m) which contained carbonised planks indicating that the structure was constructed of wood and destroyed by fire. Cremated remains were discovered in the interior.   Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey thatched house, built c. 1800. Rectangular-plan. Pitched straw thatch roof, scalloped to eaves, brick chimneystacks. Lime-washed random rubble walling. Square-headed window openings, painted timber casement windows, painted tooled stone sills. Square-headed door opening, flanking projecting engaged square piers, painted stone plinths. Two random rubble outbuildings to south, profiled metal sheeted roofs, painted random rubble walling. Road fronted east elevation.
