  Description

  Description

  Marked on the 1835 and the 1938 'OS 6-inch' maps as 'St. Patrick's Well'. The OS Letters refer to a station being held here during the mid-nineteenth century (CLAJ 1929, 54, 57). Located in a field known as 'Tubberawuscanny' (MacIvor 1944, 329). When inspected by ASI in 1967 it was described as 'a five sided pool, enclosed by dry stone walling with 2 large lintels on top. Stream nearby but no outlet visible from well. A stump of old whitethorn bush grows over well'. Nearby is a rectangular thick slab with three depressions said to represent St. Patrick's left foot, right knee and the point of his staff (IFC Schools' Mss 668, 303).   The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated to W of site of Kilpatrick Church (LH017-050----). The souterrain consisted of two chambers according to Mac Iomhair (CLAJ 1944, 328-9), though local information states that the souterrain consisted of 'four passages meeting at a crossroads'. Now inaccessible.

In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated on E shelf of long, wide ridge. Ploughed-out ring-barrow (overall diam. 16m), now visible only as sub-circular area demarcated by traces of a fosse (Wth 1.6m). Possibly part of same barrow group as nearby barrow in Rathlust townland (LH017-069----). (CLAJ 1944, 327; OS Memorandum 6352 B).

In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated on summit of ridge. Ring-barrow, consisting of a level, circular interior (diam. 11.5m, H 0.7m) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 1.2m at base, 2.7m at top) and external bank (Wth 3.5m, H 0.4m). Referred to as a 'fort' by MacIvor (CLAJ 1944, 327; 1946, 102).

  Description

  Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1860. T-plan, single-bay hipped roofed breakfronts to south of east and west elevations, canted-bay to ground floor of south breakfront, entrance porch to west elevation, two-storey return with lean-to entrance bay to east, flat-roofed entrance porch to east. Hipped slate roofs, clay ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks, projecting eaves, profiled cast-iron gutters, circular cast-iron downpipes. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling, raised block-and-start quoins to west elevation, roughcast render to north and south, smooth render to east. Square-headed window openings, tooled limestone sills, painted timber one-over-one sliding sash windows, painted timber tripartite windows to west elevation, round-headed stairwell window to east elevation. Square-headed door opening to porch, Tuscan pilasters to corners, painted timber double doors with six flat panels, limestone step to entrance. Yard to east with single- and two-storey stone outbuildings, ranged around a central gravelled courtyard, central cast-iron pump and stone trough, house forming west range; pitched slate roofs, random rubble stone walling, square-headed door and window openings, block-and-start brick surrounds to openings, limestone ashlar block-and-start surrounds to east range, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows, painted timber vertically-sheeted doors; segmental-headed carriage opening to south range. Set back from road, in own landscaped grounds to west, random rubble stone boundary walls and wrought-iron gates throughout. Further farmyard to north-east with limestone gate piers, wrought-iron gates (no access). Entrance gateway to north-west, rubble masonry boundary walls, crenellated gate piers.
