• LH017-038001 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Marked on the 1835 and 1938 'OS 6-inch' maps as 'Trinity Well'. The OS Letters refer to a formal station here on Trinity Sunday in the mid-nineteenth century (CLAJ 1929, 54). Described in 1967 (ASI field notes) as an 'irregular small pool, lined with small boulders which face the cavity in the ground. It has a modern stone lintelled roof laid on iron fragments (of a bed). An irregular path of stone steps lead down to well.' Various traditions and legends associated with it. St. Patrick is believed to have visited it and the marks of his feet are said to be left on a stone (IFC Schools' Mss 669, 4). It was also believed that the first person to draw water from it on Christmas Eve would find it had turned into wine (ibid). A bullaun stone (LH017-038002) lies beside it.   Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Drystone-built souterrain, roughly L-shaped in plan, consisting of three passages and two chambers. Passage 1 (L 10ft [3m], Wth 2.5 ft [0.9m]) led to circular beehive chamber 1 (diam. 6ft [2m]), H 8 ft [2.8m]). Passage 2 (L 20 ft [6m]) led S from chamber 1 to circular beehive chamber 2 (no dimensions). Passage 3 led S from chamber 2 for 4-6 ft [1.3m-2m], and was blocked by collapse at S end.   Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. 27.5m E-W, 24.5m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 6.5m, H 0.3m internally, 1.4m externally) with vague traces of external fosse (Wth c. 6m, D c. 0.2m), except from S-W where a large field drain has been cut at the foot of the bank. Bank gapped in several places, though ancient entrance not recognisable. A rectangular depression (L 12m, Wth 5m, D 0.5m) leads from the W side of the bank into the interior, and appears to be modern.

  A castle at Faughanstowne (49) in Kildemock parish close to the boundary with Racoolle is marked on Down Survey (1656-8) barony map, for which see this web-page accessed on 6 May, 2016 http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/down-survey-maps.php#bm=Atherdee&c=Louth MacIvor (1950, 120) contends that it was on the S side of a lane leading to a farmhouse, but the precise location is not known.
