• MA059-012 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Located on the NE shore of Lough More. This fulacht fia consists of a kidney-shaped mound (7.5m NE−SW; c. 4.5m NW-SE; max. H 0.52) composed of angular heat-shattered fragments of sandstone, conglomerate and limestone. Lake waters eroded part of the W side of the mound, exposing a damaged trough, and in 1992 a rescue excavation (92E01750) was carried out focusing on that side of the mound (McDermott 1995, 187-196). The excavation revealed that the trough was set in a depression dug into the underlying peat. The base of the depression was lined with a layer of bog myrtle leaves and, above that, a layer of moss. The E side (L 1.05m NE-SW; H 0.5m) and part of the N side (max L 0.8m NW−SE) of the trough survived in situ, and were constructed of roundwoods (diam. 6cm) horizontally laid, one on top of the other, and held in place with upright corner posts. Moss was found in the gaps between the lower timbers, perhaps used to make the trough watertight. Immediately to W of the fulacht fia mound, an irregular arc of upright stakes, is set in the lake bed. This feature could not be fully examined but it may be associated with the fulacht fia. Charcoal and charred wood fragments retrieved from the fulacht fia included ash, willow, alder, hazel and birch. Radiocarbon analysis of a timber sample produced a Bronze Age date of 1290-939 cal BC to 2 sigma (GrN 21260) (McDermott 1995, 190).   Description

  Located on the E shore line of Lough More. This fulacht fia was discovered in 1992 during a survey undertaken by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit of archaeological monuments in and around the lake. It has been largely eroded away by fluctuations in lake levels. When recorded in 1992, only a thin layer (L 7.5m; Wth 1m) of burnt stones remained (Jennings 1995, 199 (MA-BD0003)).   Description

  In Lough More, close to the E shoreline. Recorded in 1992 during a survey undertaken by the Irish Archaeologial Wetland Unit of archaeological monuments in and around the lake, this monument consist of a single stake (L 0.51m; diam. 0.05m) of mountain ash.   Description

  On SE shoreline of Lough More. during a survey undertaken by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit Recorded in 1992 during a survey undertaken by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit of archaeological monuments in and around the lake, this monument consists of a row (L 2.5m NE-SW) of c. 40 close-set, upright posts located at, and extending parallel to, the current lake edge. The uprights are of varying sizes, and in a poor state of preservation. The majority are hazel, but some alder posts were also recorded. A number of horizontal rods were also noted lying at right angles to the uprights. One possibility is that the structure formed some sort of platform or jetty (Keane 1995, 166; Jennings 1995, 200 (MA-BN0008)). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 November 2016

  Description

  On the E shoreline of Lough More. Recorded in 1992 during a survey undertaken by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit of archaeological monuments in and around the lake, this monument consists of a double line (L 2.5m) of 14 small wooden stakes (diam. 0.02-0.03m; H 0.15-0.53m) set in a rough semi-circle. The stakes, which are mostly of willow, project between 0.05-0.15m above the present ground surface (the original lake bed, now exposed) and are severely eroded. Evidence of woodworking was visible in 1992. A radially split piece of oak and a quarter split willow post are located at the E end of the structure. (Jennings 1995, 199 (MA-BN0004)).
