  Description

  In pasture, located on a low hill/drumlin, with excellent views S–NW. This enclosure is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is shown as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 15m) on the 1830 edition. There is no visible trace at ground level. According to the landowner there was a circular hollow (diam. c. 10m) with steeply sloping sides and a concave or bowl-shaped profile at this location; it did not have an enclosing bank or wall. • MA039-028 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a low N–S ridge, with good but not extensive views. Raised circular area (29m N–S; 28m E–W) defined on the E half by an earthen bank (Wth 5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 2m), which is reduced on the W half to a scarp (Wth slope 3.8m; ext. H 1.5-1.9m) with a slight internal rim. The external slope of the bank/scarp is high, with a broad slope. • MA039-029 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, with steepest fall of ground to SW–W, providing extensive views westward. A substantially raised circular area (26.2m E–W; 26m N–S) defined by a scarp (ext. H 2m at E, 2.5m at SW; Wth slope 4.5m at E, 5.6m at SW). A semicircular area (9m NE–SW; 6m NW–SE) has been quarried out of the SE quadrant, and at NNE a sunken sloping ramp (Wth 3.6m) has been cut through the scarp slope. There is a shallow surface depression (2m N–S; 1m E–W; D 0.3m) to N of centre in the interior. The interior is planted with conifers and sycamores. The scarp is ringed with hawthorn. • MA039-030001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, prominently sited on top of drumlin bordered by lowlying wet ground at E–SW, in an area of undulating terrain. There are extensive views SW–N. A ridge restricts views at E–SE. Raised oval area (36m NW–SE; 23.5m NE–SW) defined by a bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.6m at NW) with a broad external slope, best preserved on the W arc. In parts on the S–SE arc, the inner face of the bank retains only a low stony rim. At NW–ENE, the bank has been modified and incorporated into the line of a later field boundary; here the bank is reduced to a scarp and the external slope is faced with stone. The location of the original entrance not obvious: There is a narrow break (Wth 1m) in the bank at SE, bordered by two large stones on its outer edge, but this has the appearance of a relatively recent break rather than the original entrance; at the ENE there is a low area (Wth c. 1.5m) in the bank, largely concealed by overgrowth. The interior slopes gently down to SE. Two faint parallel linear features extend on a NW–SE axis across the centre of the interior, possibly relict cultivation ridges. The bank is densely ringed with gorse, with some hawthorn. Interior is grassy. Another rath (MA039-029) is located 240m to N, and there is a fulacht fia (MA039-128----) 90m to SE. In the SMR (1991) and the RMP (1997) this rath was listed as containing a children’s burial ground (MA039-030002-), however, this may have been an error.   Description

  In a rath (MA039-030001). In the SMR (1991) and the RMP (1997) a children’s burial ground is listed at his location, the source of information being a reference in Aldridge (1969, 85): ‘In Breaghwy (Mayo 39) the rath marked has been levelled except for the northern portion cut off by a fence; this remains as a CBG.’ This rath (MA039-030001-), which is fully intact, does not match Aldridge’s description. This would suggest that an error was made by the SMR, and that this rath is not the location of the children’s burial ground recorded by Aldridge. • MA039-059 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a gentle W-facing slope, giving good views over a flat expanse of mixed pasture and bog. This rath is depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure, and on the 1930 edition as a semicircular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 25m), open to the W, and bisected on the N edge by a field fence on an E-W axis. The two third of the rath which lies to S of the E-W field fence was levelled in the early 20th-century, and no visible trace is now evident at ground level. To the N of the fence, a portion of the rath survives as a D-shaped area (23m E-W; 6.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.5m). There are three eroded breaks (Wth 1.6-2m) in the bank. Outside the bank at NW is a discrete shallow depression (Wth 2m), which appears to be an area of disturbance rather than evidence of a fosse. • MA039-128 Fulacht fia
  Description

  In rough, damp pasture, close to a natural spring now diverted into an underground pipe. A road borders the E side of the field. Low, sod-covered horseshoe-shaped mound (15.5m N-S; 8.5m E-W; H 0.4m) with a depression (Wth 5m) between the arms of the mound at SW, possibly indicating the position of a trough.   Located on gently elevated ground, in the back garden of a modern bungalow. According to local information, a souterrain was uncovered here and then backfilled in the early 20th century. • MA040-034 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a low N−S ridge, with sweeping views SE−W. Slightly raised oval area (c. 35m NE−SW; c. 25m NW−SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.3m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.7m at SW). The bank is best preserved on the S arc, where large boulders roughly face the inner edge. For much of the circuit the internal face of the bank is low, especially on the N arc, where it is reduced to a scarp with a slight internal lip. A gap (Wth 4m) in the bank at SE may be the location of an original entrance. The interior is level, and according to local tradition contains a souterrain (MA040-034001-). • MA040-035 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, straddling the rocky break of slope at the top of a SE-facing slope, overlooking a bend in a stream, which is located at the base slope immediately to E−SE. Oval area (31.5m NE−SW; 20m NW−SE) defined by a stony earthen bank/scarp, and enclosed by a fosse with remnants of an external bank on the SW arc. The inner bank (Wth 5.4m; int. H 1m at SW, 1.45m at W; ext. H 1.5m at SW, 2.3m at W) incorporates much small angular stones. At NE-SSE the bank is reduced to a scarp (Wth slope 4.5-5m; ext. H 3m) which has a steep external slope, merging with the natural fall of ground. There is much stone tumble on the external slope, and at S it incorporates an area of natural bedrock. On the N arc the external face of the bank is incorporated into a later E−W field fence. The fosse (Wth 3.5m at SW, 3m at W) and external bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 1.3m, at SW) are best preserved on the SW arc. At SW−NW the external bank has been incorporated into or truncated by a later field fence. At NW−NE fosse is evident as a slight depression and the external bank has been levelled. On the E arc the fosse and external bank are barely discernible. There is a break (Wth 3.2m) in the inner bank at NE, now blocked on its outer edge by a later E−W field fence; this may be the location of an original entrance. The interior is grass-covered, with encroachment of hazel and brambles; the perimeter is densely ringed with hazel, hawthorn and brambles. There is another rath (MA040-034----) 170m to N.   Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, with good views, especially to S. Slightly raised broadly oval area (30m N−S; 34m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H -.75m; ext. H 1.8m). On the E arc the bank is incorporated into the line of a farm laneway which extends to N and S of the rath; breaks in the bank at SE and NE allow access into the rath from the laneway. On the S arc bank has been adapted to serve as a field boundary. The level interior is densely covered in hawthorn, hazel and blackthorn scrub.   Description

  In pasture, located on low ridge. There is a gradual fall of ground to S towards a stream. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown as a small circular hachured feature on the 1922 edition. This possible house or hut site consists of a slightly raised subcircular area (5.5m E−W; 4.6m N−S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.7m), faced internally, and in parts externally on the W arc, by rounded stones and boulders. The interior is level, and appears almost square rather than circular in plan. There is a low eroded area (Wth 1.2m) in the enclosing bank at NNW. It is engulfed in blackthorn and brambles. There is a N−S field fence immediately to W. There is rath (MA040-036----) 260m to NE. • MA040-038 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on low N−S ridge, with a stream at the base of the ridge slope at N−E. There are good views to E. Raised circular area (38.3m E−W; 38.6m N−S) defined by an earthen bank and enclosed by a fosse and external bank. The inner bank (Wth 6.4m; int. H 1.5m at W; ext. H 2.8m at W, is well preserved for most of the circuit, with remnants of internal stone facing in parts, but at NE−E a section (L 11m) is reduced to a low scarp (H 0.5m). The fosse (Wth 4.4m at E, 5.3m at S) is broad and flat-based, and the external bank (Wth 5m at E, 4m at S; int. H 1.5m at E, 2m at S; ext. H 1.3-1.4m) is substantial. The rath extends the full N−S width of the modern field, and the external bank at N and S has been incorporated into E−W field fences. Breaks (Wth 2m) in the external bank at SE and SW allow E−W passage via the fosse from one side of the field to the other; in this area the external face of the inner bank and the internal face of the external bank have been cut to the vertical. The original entrance may have been at NE, where the inner bank is lowest, and where there is a gap (Wth 2m) in the external bank; and there is a hint of an intervening causeway across the fosse. There is also a gap (Wth 2m) in the inner bank at SW. The interior is open and grassy; the perimeter is thickly ringed with hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel and brambles. • MA040-039 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on low N−S ridge, with good views. Raised roughly circular area (29.5m E−W; 27.3 N−S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.65m at E, 0.9m at W; ext. H 1.25m). At NW−NE the bank has been incorporated into or replaced by a field fence, faced internally and externally with drystone walling, which retains the curve of the rath. There is a break (Wth 1m) at NW and another (Wth 1m) at NE. At SE there is a low area in the bank with a line of stones on its inner edge, possibly a blocked up entrance gap. Immediately outside the bank at SW−SE is a low berm-like feature (Wth 1-3m; H 0.2m). The interior is level, with a very a slight slope from centre down to E. Occasional boulders break the surface; there is a heap of stones to NE of centre. Grass cover; mature conifers growing in interior. There is a rath (MA040-040----) 100m to S.   Description

  In pasture, located on low N−S ridge, with a steep slope on the W side. The location provides extensive views. Slightly raised, subcircular area (c. 20m N−S; c. 22m E−W) enclosed on the E half by a bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 0.9m at NE) which has been modified to serve as a field boundary, and on the W half by a low scarp (ext. H 0.9m). In the W half of the interior there is a raised area (Wth c. 5m E-W; c. 6-7m N−S), within which there is a souterrain (MA040-040001-). A low, irregular curving stony scarp (H 0.2-0.3m) marks off the SE quadrant of the rath interior, which dips to a lower level than the rest of the interior. A slight N−S linear feature extends through the centre of the rath, possibly an old field fence or cultivation ridge. Grass cover, with hawthorn and blackthorn around the perimeter and encroaching on the interior at E.   Description

  Located in a rath (MA040-040). A low raised area (6m N-S; 5m E-W; H 0.35m at W) in W half of the interior of rath incorporates a souterrain. Two lintelled openings are evident, one at the N and one at the S end of the rise. The openings reveal a dry-stone passage (Wth c. 0.8m; D 0/2-0.3m), which is infilled with soil, and is inaccessible.   Description

  In pasture, located at the junction of field walls on a low N-S ridge. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a small circular feature at the junction of three field boundaries; not shown on later map editions. Roughly square feature (7m E-W, c. 5-7m N-S) defined on E, S and W sides by a bank (Wth 2.2m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 0.7m) of earth and stone, and on the N side by a field wall. Another field wall on a N-S axis abuts the bank at the S. The function of this feature is unclear –it may be the remains of a small structure or hut. It is partly obscured by gorse and hawthorn.
