• MA071-055 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a level area at the SW end of the top of a low ridge. The slope falls away steeply to S and W into a shallow valley of damp pasture through which a stream flows, 170m to W. There are good views along the course of the stream. Ground rises to NE along the spine of the ridge towards another rath (MA071-056----) which is 140m to ENE. An enclosure (MA071-057----), now destroyed, is locate downslope 250m to SE. Raised circular area (34.4m N−S; 34.3m E−W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.6m, at NW), reduced to a scarp (ext. H 2m at S) at E−S. The bank has a fairly vertically cut external slope –most likely the result of modification in the past to serve as a field boundary. A portion of the scarp (L 16m) at E has been leveled; the original entrance may have been along here, facing the top of the ridge. There is a slight depression (Wth c. 3m) immediately outside the bank/scarp at S, with a slight rise (L 8m; Wth 3.5m) on its outer edge at WSW −these feature may be the remains of a fosse and external bank. The rath interior is level. There is a possible souterrain (MA071-055001-) in the SE quadrant. A deep grassed-over depression/quarry pit (20m E−W; c. 12m N−S; D 1.4m) cuts through the NE quadrant, and remnants of a roughly N−S field fence cross the scarp on the E edge of the rath. • MA071-056 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on the summit of a low ridge with excellent views over a broad sweep of countryside. The ridge slope is steepest to S−SW, overlooking a shallow valley of damp pasture, with a stream 350m to W. Roughly circular raised area or platform (30.8m E−W; c. 28m N−S) defined by a scarp ( H 1.8m at NNE, 1.2m at SE) which retains a hint of an internal rim on the N arc. The scarp is enhanced on the N and S arcs by the natural ridge slope. A field fence on a roughly E−W axis crosses the S edge of the rath. To S of this, the S arc of the rath scarp is engulfed in dense overgrowth, and is difficult to examine. At SW−NW the scarp has been levelled to a low rise. Four contiguous boulders sit on the top edge of the enclosing scarp at NE and there are two close-set boulders on the inner edge of the scarp at NW, but it is not clear if these are remnants of an original kerb or stone facing or simply the result of more recent changes to the rath. Several large stones and boulders lie on the external slope of the scarp, and a loose spread of stones is evident in the interior at NW−N, probably field clearance stones. There is another rath (MA071-055----) 140m to SW at the W end of the same ridge, and an enclosure (MA071-057----), now destroyed, is 130m downslope to SE. • MA071-057 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on the W side of a rise where ground falls away to a lowlying area of rougher, wettish pasture. Overlooked immediately to NW by a ridge on top of which two raths (MA071-055----; MA071-056----) are located. This enclosure is depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular embanked enclosure (diam. 30-35m) cut through roughly centrally by a N−S road; it is shown on the 1931 edition as a subrectangular hachured area (c. 45m N−S; c. 20m E−W) bordered at W by the N−S road and at S by an E−W field boundary. According to local information, it was partially levelled in the early 1980’s. When inspected in 1997 it survived as a roughly rectangular raised area (c. 35-40m N−S; 22m E−W to road) defined to S and W by a levelled scarp, merging almost indistinguishably with the natural slope. To N it was defined by a gentle slope dropping into to a shallow depression (W c.6m), possibly a fosse, bordered externally by a low but distinct rise (W c. 6-7m; H ext. 0.7m), possibly an external bank. The E side is bordered by a field fence flanking a road; a rise in road level roughly mirrors the N−S profile of the enclosure. In the field to E of the road, a thicket of blackthorn (Wth c.10m E/W) extends N−S parallel to the enclosure, but no upstanding archaeological features can be seen. • MA072-007 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a ridge with extensive views. There is a stream 140m to S and another 300m to N; these streams coincide with the S and N boundaries of the townland. Raised circular area or platform (31.5m N–S; 31.5m E–W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.3m at N, 0.75m at S; ext. H 2m at N, 1.75m at S). Stone protruding in parts at the base of the inner face of the bank may be the remains of a kerb. At SE–NNW the bank is incorporated into a N−S field fence. There is no clearly defined entrance, but it may have been to ESE where the bank is noticeably lower and slumped. The interior is level. There is a sod-covered stony mound (diam. 3.5m; H 0.5m) slightly NE of centre, possibly a field clearance cairn. A souterrain (MA072-007001-) is located in the N half of the interior. The rath is lightly ringed with hawthorn and blackthorn. There is a telegraph pole stands on the bank at SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 16 February 2021

• MA072-007001 Souterrain
  Description

  Located in a rath (MA072-007). A opening, roofed by a flat stone slab or lintel, is visible in the external face of the rath bank at NNE, 0.5m below the top of the bank. The opening (H 0.3m) is partly blocked, but reveals a souterrain passage (Wth c. 0.8m) of drystone construction, which extends to SSW beneath the bank into the interior of the rath. A very slight surface depression can be seen in the rath interior, extending for 5m to SW from the inner face of the bank; this probably indicates the line of the passage. • MA072-008 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In pasture, straddling the NE-facing slope of a rise. There is a stream, coinciding with the N boundary of the townland 100m to N. Raised circular area (21.6m NNE−SSW; 23.5m ESE−WNW) defined by a drystone wall (Wth 1.7m; int. H 1.4mm; ext. H 1.5m at SW). On the NE arc the enclosure is built up to create a level interior and compensate for the natural slope. As a result, the enclosing wall at N−E consists of a high stone-faced external scarp (ext. H 2m); the internal wall face is low (H 0.15m) and largely tumbled and in parts at NE barely rises above interior ground level. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.8m) at SSW. The wall terminal on the E side of the gap incorporates large stones and projects outwards slightly. A field wall, which coinciding with the townland boundary between Carrowbaun and Rabaun, crosses the enclosure to SE of centre. In the N half of the interior, there is a narrow gully/trench (L 5m NNE−SSW; W 0.4m, 1m at N end; D 0.3-0.4m) of uncertain significance. • MA072-009001 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a ridge. There is a stream 230m to SW. Slightly raised circular area (29m N-S; 30.7m E-W) defined by a low, sod-covered stone bank. A basal course of large stones and boulders can be seen on the external face at SE−SSW, and in parts at N. The interior is level. A souterrain (MA072-009002) is indicated in the W half on the 1930 OS 6-inch map; it is evident as a series of surface depressions extending through the interior. Two field walls cross the interior, intersecting in a T-shaped arrangement: one on a sinuous NE-SW line to E of centre, the other perpendicular to the latter, extending through the NW quadrant. • MA072-009002 Souterrain
  Description

  In a cashel (SL072-009001-). This souterrain is indicated as ‘Cave’ in the W half of the ringfort interior on the 1930 OS 6-inch map. A stone slab, horizontally set, is exposed in the exterior face of the enclosing stone bank on the SW side of the ringfort. This appears to be an in situ roof lintel of the souterrain. Immediately to N of this, a shallow, grassed-over surface depression (L 1.6m NNE−SSW; Wth 1.2m) is evident in the ringfort interior, and a few meters to NNE of that is another surface depression ( L 3m NE−SW; Wth 2m; D 0.4m), at the NE of which a flat slab, probably another roof lintel, breaks the surface. These features trace the line of the souterrain. In the NE quadrant of the ringfort, there is larger, grassed-over depression (Wth 2-4m; D 0.8m) which extends for 12m on a NNW−SSE axis; no stones are evident, but this may also be part of the souterrain, possibly a collapsed passage or chamber.
