- MA065-038 Cairn - wayside cairn
Description
Located in rough, heather-covered terrain, on a high mountain pass, straddling the townland boundary between Doeega and Dereen. Towards the E end of their extent, there are views over Achill Sound, with the distinctive silhoutte of Croagh Patrick visible in the distance. A complex of approximately forty small bog-bound cairns are scattered along the mountain pass in a number of discrete clusters. The cairns consist of roughly circular piles of large and medium-sized stones and slabs. Some cairns support a plain upright slab. In the oral tradition of the locality the cairns are associated with a funerary route between the settlements on the SW side of Achill and Cill Damhnait church (MA065-024001-) and burial ground (MA065-024002-) of on the eastern side of the Island.
