• MA063-007 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In a thicket of overgrowth in the E half of a pasture field, located on top of a steep-sided knoll, overlooking flat, lowlying ground. A low ridge restricts views to N. An old farm track skirts the E side of the knoll, and there is a farmstead immediately to E. Roughly oval area (c. 20m N−S; c. 15-18m E−W) encompassing the top of the knoll, and defined by a scarp (c. 1.8m at SE) merging with the natural slope. In parts the scarp is topped by a slight stony rim. The scarp has a broader, lower slope at NE; the original entrance may have been on this side. The NW part of the knoll has been deeply quarried out in the early 20th century to a depth of c. 3m, destroying the NW and centre of the rath interior. The surviving portion of the interior has a very slight slope outwards from centre to the perimeter There is a local tradition that the rath was used for the burial of unbaptized babies (MA063-007001-); one grave is visible in the SE quadrant. • MA063-007001 Children's burial ground
  Description

  In a rath (MA063-007----). According to local tradition, the rath interior was used for the burial of unbaptized babies. One grave is visible in the SE quadrant of the interior: Two low, upright stone slabs, set 0.8m apart, protrude c. 0.1-0.15m above ground, their long axes parallel on a NW−SE axis; according to local information, these mark the head and foot of a grave (L 0.8m). • MA063-008 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a slight rise in rough rush-grown ground. There is a stream 80m to E. The townland boundary coincides with the N-S course of the stream. Slightly raised circular area (30.5m E−W; 33.4m N−S) defined by a low earthen bank/scarp and enclosed by an external fosse. The enclosing bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.9m) is best preserved at SE−W; elsewhere it is reduced to a scarp with a slightly raised internal rim. A section of the scarp at NE is markedly lower, and this may indicate the location of an original entrance. A short section of the bank at SE has been dug away. The fosse is evident as a shallow depression (Wth 2-2.5m), most clearly defined on the S arc; it is marked by a growth of rushes. A hint of a rise outside the fosse at SE and NW may indicate a levelled outer bank, but this is very uncertain. The interior is level, except for a slight dip at N. Relict cultivation ridges traverse the interior on a NE−SW axis. There is a local tradition that the interior was used as a children’s burial ground (MA063-008001-). An E−W field wall/property boundary cuts across the N half of the interior. Another field wall skirts the outer edge of the fosse at SW-W, and a field wall on a N−S axis lies just outside the rath at E. There is an enclosure (MA063-056----) 90m to S. • MA063-008001 Children's burial ground
  Description

  In a rath (MA063-008----). The interior of the rath was used for the burial of unbaptized babies. According to local information, two small surface concentrations of stones, visible in the N half of the interior, are graves; one is located close to the rath scarp at N, and the other is at NE, adjacent to a hawthorn tree growing on the E−W field wall that crosses the rath.   Description

  In pasture, on a low rise in rough rush-grown ground. There is a stream 180m to E. The townland boundary coincides with the N-S course of the stream. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 20m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on the 1920 edition. It has been levelled.   Description

  Located in level, rough rush-grown pasture. There is a stream 100m to E. The townland boundary coincides with the N−S course of the stream. A rath (MA063-008) is located c. 90m to N. Listed in the SMR (1991) and RMP (1997) as an enclosure on the basis of a subrectangular feature visible in an aerial photograph (GSI G 133-4; Roll 231, pr. 19) (SMR file). This possible enclosure is evident at ground level as a very slightly raised subcircular area (c. 14m N−S; c. 12m E−W) marked by an uneven, stony ground surface, with a few larger stones protruding from the sod in parts around the perimeter.
