- MA039-100 Castle - unclassified
Description
In level lowlying pasture, overlooked by a ridge of higher ground to NE. A rectangular building (c. 14m N–S; c. 10m E–W), annotated ‘Castle (in ruins)’ is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later editions, where the location is marked ‘Castle (Site of). No visible surface trace. A low rise (20-30m across) is evident at the location, truncated at E by a modern bungalow. - MA039-101 Enclosure
Description
In pasture, located on a NW–SE ridge. A small, circular embanked enclosure (diam. 15-20m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is depicted on the 25-inch plan as a D-shaped hachured feature (c. 12-15m NE–SW; c. 8m NW–SE) bordered on the straight side to NW by a field boundary. It is not shown on the 1930 OS 6-inch edition. No visible surface trace. The nature of this monument is uncertain. It may have been a small ringfort, but it is possible that it was a type of barrow or mound. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 April 2020
