• MA039-091 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In improved pasture, straddling a low rise at the base of the W-facing slope of a ridge. A tract of bog lies 200m to W. Broadly oval raised area (c. 40m E–W; 32m N–S) enclosed by a compact, stony earthen bank (Wth 6-6.4m; int. H 0.4-0.8m; ext. H 1m at S, 1.8m at NW). The bank has a relatively low internal rim and a broad, well defined external slope, most pronounced on the NW side where there is a steeper natural fall of ground. Large stones and boulders are evident along the top and sides of the bank, and may be the result of field clearance. A markedly low area (Wth c. 2m) in the bank at ENE may indicate the location of an original entrance, but does not constitute a clearly defined gap. In the N half of the level interior there is a low mound (5.6m NW–SE; 4.4m NE–SW; H 0.5m) of earth and stones; it does not appear to have any structure and is probably a field clearance heap. The perimeter of the rath is ringed with hawthorn and hazel, which also encroach on the interior. The centre of the interior is obscured by a dense thicket of blackthorn and brambles. Immediately outside the rath at NW there is a depression (diam. c. 5m), possibly an old quarry pit, which is partly infilled with stones and debris, and largely obscured by blackthorn scrub and brambles. • MA039-092 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, straddling the narrow top of a steep-sided N–S ridge. It is located just to S of the highest point of the ridge. The E slope of the ridge is very steep, with the fall of ground beginning 6m E of the rath, dropping to an area of damp ground. The location provides panoramic views. Raised circular area (c. 25.3m E–W; 22.4m N–S) enclosed by an earthen bank with an external fosse. The bank (Wth 4.8-5m; int. H 0.2-0.35m; ext. H 1.8m) is built of gravelly earth. It has a low internal rim but a pronounced compact external slope. There are several narrow eroded breaks, at N, NE and SSW. A wider break (Wth 1.4m) at SE coincides with the lowest section of the bank, and may mark an original entrance. Some large stone and boulders occur at this gap and along the inner face of the bank in this area, but it is unclear if they are an original feature –some appear to be loose field clearance stones. The fosse is clearly defined only at N (Wth 3m; D 0.4m), elsewhere around the circuit it is evident as a slight depression (Wth 1.5-2m). In the E half of the interior, a low stony scarp curving NNE–SSW, with hazel trees growing along its edge, marks a drop in ground level and a slight slope down to E and SE.   Description

  In pasture, located on top of a low ridge, at its SE end close to an E-facing slope. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 1930 OS 6-inch as a roughly circular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 25m). There are scant remains visible at ground level: A subcircular undulation (diam. c. 25m) can be discerned, with traces of a slight curving scarp at E, merging with the natural fall of ground.   In pasture, located on a ridge, close to the break of slope on the NE side, overlooking a flat expanse of lowlying damp pasture to N–NE. Shown as roughly oval, embanked enclosure (25-30m NW–SE; c. 20m NE–SW) on the 1838 OS 6-inch map but not shown on the 1930 edition.   Description

  In forestry, located at base of N-facing slope, bordering an expanse of reclaimed wet ground. An oval, grass covered mound (11m E-W; 8m N-S; H 0.3m, 0.8m at N), at the E end of which there is a lower, less distinct rise (L 4m) extending to NE, giving the whole an overall, roughly crescentic shape, open to NW.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, extant 1883, on an L-shaped plan with single-bay (south) or two-bay (north) two-storey side elevations. Occupied, 1911. Reroofed, ----. Replacement hipped artificial slate roof on an L-shaped plan with ridge tiles, paired cement rendered central chimney stacks having capping supporting terracotta pots, and uPVC rainwater goods on rendered cut-limestone eaves. Creeper- or ivy-covered rendered walls. Segmental-headed central door opening with timber mullions on padstones supporting timber cornice, and rendered surround framing timber panelled door having sidelights on panelled risers below fanlight. Square-headed window openings with creeper- or ivy-covered cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Set in landscaped grounds.
