• MA082-019 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a low rise overlooked by rising ground to S–SW. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure, and on the 1916 as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. 30m) incorporated into field boundaries at SE–NW. Also recorded in an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 645-4; Roll 218, pr. 9). This enclosure was levelled during land reclamation; there is no visible trace at ground level. • MA082-020 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a knoll with a steep fall of ground to N–NE, with extensive views N–S. It is overlooked by a higher ridge at W–SW. This enclosure is not shown on the 1938 OS 6-inch map. It is shown on the 25-inch plan and on the 1916 OS 6-inch map as an oval embanked enclosure (diam. c. 20m NW-SE; c. 15-20m NE-SW) with an outer enclosing bank incorporated on the E arc into a field boundary; field walls radiate from it to NNE, SE, SSW, and WNW. It is also recorded in an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 645-4; Roll 218, pr. 10) It was levelled during land reclamation; the ephemeral outline of a roughly circular rise (diam. c. 20m) can be traced, merging with the natural contours of the hill.   Description

  In undulating pasture. Not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Visible in an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 645-4; Roll 218, pr. 9) as a circular enclosure or earthwork. A circular area (diam. c. 27-30m) is defined by the ephemeral outline of a levelled scarp, clipped at NW by a farm track on a NE–SW axis. There is an enclosure (MA082-019----) 80m to N, and two enclosures (MA082-020----; MA082-040----) c. 180m to SSW and 190m to S, respectively. • MA082-040 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In undulating pasture, located on a knoll, overlooked at SW–W by a ridge. Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Recorded in aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 645 –4; Roll 218, pr. 10). A circular area (31m N–S; c. 28m E–W) is defined by a low sod-covered stony rise (Wth 2-3.5m) representing a levelled enclosing bank or wall. It is incorporated into a later field wall at NNE–SSE. The interior slopes down gently to NE. There is a roughly circular, shallow surface depression (diam. 2-3m) to E of centre. According to local tradition, ‘stone flags’ were uncovered in the enclosure, possibly indicating a souterrain (MA082-040001-). • MA082-040001 Souterrain
  Description

  In a ringfort (MA082-040----). According to local tradition, ‘stone flags’ were uncovered in the interior of the ringfort, possibly part of the lintel roof of a souterrain. The exact location is uncertain but it may be to E of centre where there is a roughly circular, shallow surface depression (diam. 2-3m). • MA082-051 Megalithic structure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a slight rise, overlooked to NW by higher ground. Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. A sod-covered subrectangular mound or cairn (14.8m NW-SE; 12.4m NE-SW), with a ramp-like profile on its long axis. It is highest at the SE end (H 1.1m) sloping down from there to a poorly defined NW edge that is more or less flush with surrounding ground level. In parts where the sod has been eroded by farm stock, it can be seen that the mound is composed predominately of stones. There is a low raised stony rim (Wth c. 2m) along the top edge of the mound at E−SE. A hawthorn tree grows from the low NW end of the mound and is encircled at its roots by a jumble of loose stone. Two stone slabs barely protrude above this loose rubble. The slabs appear to be set upright and are in line with the long axis of the cairn, and it is possible that they are part of a structure concealed within the cairn. The nature of this monument is uncertain. Some, at least, of the accumulated stones appear to be field clearance stones, and the bulk of the mound may be the result of field clearance activity. However, there is a possibility that the cairn is ancient or incorporates an archaeologically significant core. Several hawthorn trees growing on the mound, particularly at the SE end.
